Califruty's #1 cash crop
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:54:12 AM »
I heard this on the news today, (I have not verified it)
The story goes that POT is Califruitys biggist cash crop, estimated to be
in excess of $14 billion, bigger than fruit and vegetables combined.
Problem is it is illegal and pays no taxes to the state. SOOOOOO in
these economic times Califriuty is talking about legalizing it, so they
can collect taxes. I would have thunk that in Califruity it would have been legal
years ago. ;D :o ::)
Maybe some of you folks that have time can search this out and see how true it is.

Hate to tell ya Rex but POT is the largest money "crop" in other states as well.  I have always said it would be better to quit spending millions of tax money to fight pot.  It is waste of money and time.  Now, Crack and such is another story.

I wouldn't know good pot from bad my self so they can legalize it every where as far as i care. When i drank, alcohol gave me all the buzz i needed and more most of the time. Do you every wonder why the taxes on booze is not as high
as tobacco

Marijuana has been decriminalized in California for years now.  Unless you are caught selling it it is a mere ticket with a small fine.  They don't even take your stash if it isn't large enough to be considered possession with intent to sell.

Just don't come to Alabama with ANY.  In Alabama each county Sherriff gets a food allowance from each person in the county jail.  Anything the Sheriff DOES NOT SPEND gets to keep it for his income.  The Sheriffs look real hard to find any reason to put you in jail because it’s more money for him.  Alabama is about the most corrupt government/law enforcement state in the union.  Just be careful going through this state!!!

I might be wrong, but I believe that canabis has been our nations biggest money making crop for decades now.  I think that it about doubles the value of our nations corn crop which happens to be number two.

I suspect that this is nothing more than the latest attempt to get pot legalized in California, which is hurting for cash.  How would it be possible to quantify the value of an illegal crop?

In actuality, the value of pot would be less if legal and sold like cigs. It is the value based on illegality.

Rex, I hate to break it to you but you can get a card in California for medical purposes from any doctor feel good and grow up to six plants per person.  I know of more than a handful of people that make a six figure income growing a cash crop. May grow on public lands so there property can't be taken from them by the state if caught. It's not new news, it's been going on for over thirty years. -gary

Medical marijuana isn't only in California either.  Seems like there are about 8-10 states that have laws now... More talk about it every year, and most started the discussion when economic times were much better.  For most it's simply a matter of where their justice resources can best be used.  If putting an 8 time olympic gold medal winner in jail and declaring him "useless to society" makes sense to you, you're in a dying breed.

Of course it's still illegal under Federal law regardless of what the states do.

you sound like i have a dog in this fight, i just reported what i heard on the
news. I don't care if you smoke it on the court house steps. If it is legal
like some have said, why are people still being arrested for it?
I a with you Sam what exactly is a gold metal winners function, how much does swimming pay, is he exempt from laws? ???

Pretty obvious that being smart is not at the top of his list or he would have been in a dark closet or some where not getting his picture made.

Oh well i am just part of that dieing breed that thinks if you don't like the law
help change it, don't just go ahead a break it then cry when you get caught,
i have been caught a time or two doing things i knew was illegal, and i hated it
but no one made me do it and i had to pay, where were all these bleeding hearts that think you should just get a slap on the paw.

The state can pass all the Laws it wants, pot is still a controlled substance under federal laws and if the Feds deem you a threat enough to go after, they will get you and you will pay.

I think Dukk could tell us how often a person gets found not guilty in a Federal court.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

That would be something very close to never.  But under the current system, at least in the midwest, the feds generally take only the strongest cases.  Again, it's just a matter of where the resources can best be used.  Spending a bunch of money on science and lawyers to prosecute a kid with a joint isn't viewed as worth the effort when there are dealers and white collar criminals and kiddy porn and any number of other violent offenses out there to pursue.

Well, let's see here.
I agree that weed is illegal.
I will not argue for or against legalizing it, BUT:
Alcohol is in the same league with it, anyway you look at it. Both are recreational drugs that can be abused.
We tried making booze illegal and where that went and why we stopped making it illegal.
It seems too me that the boy/young man made a mistake having his picture associated with a bong, that I agree. We don't seem to ostracize Bubba in some of the film clips I see but just laugh.
He made a mistake---shouldn't be carried around like an anchor the rest of his life--IMO.
What has he done that the rest of us have not done equally with alcohol?
I don't know but wasting our resources on a substance that has been around since the beginning and was used in ceremonies to mark a treaty of peace is a little absurd.

Just down the road from me on the ridge the boys grow some good stuff I hear. Even former GOV. Jerry Brown had property up there. They make a lot of busts up there and are talking about it was worth 50 thou to several hundred thou. Boy they could make a lot of tax money off of that. While I was stationed in Hawaii at a transmitter site it used to grow wild on the base. Was safer there than the local guys gowing it in the wild. And before any comments, yes I have tried it, dint like it and havant tried it since.

Calling pot a cash crop implies that it carries a high street value, has a low production cost and it sought after by illegal drug buyers. This is not true. I regularly buy nickle bags for $20.
