OK Coleman, I'll try to be as honest as possible on my assessment.

I won't be guilty of telling you it is the best rifle ever, but, It appears to be a really nice rifle, in spite of the low price.
Marlin might not be stretching things when they call it the best in it's class ?

The only real fault I find with mine, is the blind magazine.  However, the one I have strips cartridges from the magazine, and into the breach so straight, that even after about 18 times through the action, the ammo still looks real presentable, unlike the battered tip, scratched up messes I have pitched after season, with two other blind magazine rifles I have owned in the past.  I don't know if I just ended up with one that feeds well by luck of the draw, or whether other guys will have had the same or different feeding experience with theirs ?

After floating the barrel, mine will shoot within an inch and a quarter, and hold point of aim through 5 shot strings (the 3 times I shot 5 shot groups, anyway).

The trigger is decent enough, and fully adjustable.   Out of the box, mine broke cleanly and consistently at 3 pounds, with no discernible creep, so I left it alone.

The safety is user friendly, and located in the right place.

The bolt opporates as smoothly as any rifle I have, in fact, so smoothly, that when I was a poster on a drive our group had, I was forced to shoot a doe and button buck they chased by me, and everyone thought another poster with a Remington auto had been the one that shot.

The rifle is light and handles well.

I'm real happy with it, and while I bought it for wet days, it may well see a lot of use when the sun shines, too ?

I rode with him,---------I got no complaints. ---------Cowpox

Coleman,

Welcome to the forum. I enjoyed your post, especially the experiences at the gun stores. I can't give you any feedback on the XS7 since I've never owned, shot, or for that matter, even seen one yet in real life. But, it sounds like you've narrowed things down quite nicely and you know exactly what you are looking for, so I'm thinking you can't really go wrong in your decision. From what I've heard and read about the XS7, I'm betting it will be a fine rifle for your needs.

Cowpox: good review of your XS7.

Trying to kill a dull afternoon I walked into my local gunstore a few days ago to browse. I had given up hunting almost 5 years ago and had sold off most of my high powered rifles. I was starting to feel the urge to hunt again so I toodled into the shop to see what was available. I found the Marlin XL7 in .270 on the rack. After inspecting the rifle I looked at the price tag. I started to drool and shake and almost tripped on my tongue getting it to the counter. I ended up purchasing two of these little buggers. The quality is VERY good. The triggers are excellent and the safety is smooth and positive.
I have owned many rifles in various brands over the years, Savage, Carl Gustav, Marlin lever actions, Mossberg and a couple Remington 700's and stainless mountain rifles. The Savage 30-06 and Carl Gustav 6.5x55 were amazing shooters. They were dirt cheap and outshot both Remingtons and my friends expensive Weatherby. Is there a moral to my story? Perhaps. I will NEVER again spend my hard earned money for an expensive name brand rifle when there are Savage and Marlins available. Just my humble opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone. But times are tough and I just purchased two good rifles for less than what one expensive job would have cost. I will put some good optics on them and let you all know how they do. I will not be suprised if I am able to get 1" or less groups with my handloads. What more can I ask for?

I picked one up in 30-06 some time back and feel that it's the best value on the market right now.  The synthetic stock feels good in the hand and really seems to dampen felt recoil much better than most stocks.  Mine will consistently put 3 shots of factory ammo into less than 1 1/4" at 100 yards.  I've seen a lot of more expensive rifles out there that couldn't do that.

Coleman,

I am not a XL7 owner, as I have passed on buying one twice in the last 3 weeks. I finally got the money up, only to find out the wife will either be laid off for unknown amount of time or have her hours cut starting tomorrow (Monday). I think now though, I will save what little bit of money I have kept back that I did not bring out to pay bills with, and try to buy one in either 7mm-08 or .308. From the couple I have handled, they seem to bet pretty well bit and the stock a little stiffer than the Savage synthetic stocked ones.

Now has anyone heard when the XS7 will actually be in gun shops for sale?

The first of 243 and 308 are at the range for pre-production testing . Once that is completed, full production will be begin, they may be available to distributors by the end of March.

Tim,

Can you share where you got the information with me about the XS7? You seem to have an inside scoop. I have found nothing on Marlin's website about it.

I have an anonymous(for now) contact at Remington that helps with questions like this when I ask, if he doesn't know, he finds out, usually he's on top of things like this tho.

Thanks. I've got an uncle that works for Remington in the ammo plant here in AR. He told me 2 weeks ago, that they are making 2.2 million rounds a day, and they are being shipped as fast as they can make ammo. I was asking him about the lack of pistol ammo on shelves around here, when he told me about the above info. He said .223 and .308 is moving just as quick. So, if I can buy a new .308 in the XS7 in say two months, hopefully I'll be able to find some ammo for it.  :o
