Got a new IZH-94!
« on: February 17, 2009, 12:56:44 PM »

At the recent Greensboro gun show, I found a IZH-94 Sever model in near mint condition.  It is a 22 mag/20 gauge model with joined barrels and 3 inch chamber.  Not a mark on it!  Twin triggers, sling, walnut stock, rifle over shotgun.  A truly beautiful gun that seems very well made for the price.  At home on my postal scale, it weighed 6 lbs., 15 oz. with the sling attached.  I went there looking for a Savage 24, but after looking at about 8 of them, all in poor shape, I found the Baikal.  This is subjective, of course, but to me the Baikal is a light years better value.

My only problem now is trying to understand the complex game laws about using a combination gun on state or federal lands.  If I have to consult a lawyer each time I hunt, it is going to be rough.  Looking through the NC regulations, it is near impossible to determine what to do.  I apparently can use it okay on private lands, however.  When turkey hunting, you can't carry rifle ammo.

Just want to post.  I really like my IZH-94! ;D

Can you carry a .22 handgun and some ammo for it, not rifle ammo?

That question is probably above my pay grade.  From a quick look at the regulations, however, it seems you can't carry a pistol when turkey hunting.  You may be able to carry it for other kinds of wildlife in season.

I had a Baikal IZH-94 in 12/30-06 which was a fantastic gun.  You should look at the Heritage Arms Turkey chokes...

Have you spoken with your Game Warden about your question and concerns?  I have found them to e very reasonable with resonable people who proactively ask them questions.

Yes I did contact someone in the Wildlife Commision about regulations.  He said I could use it on private lands for turkey if not carrying 22 ammo.  I can't use it on public lands---so it seems.  He spoke primarily in relation to turkey hunting.  For other types of game I am still in the dark. The whole matter seems very complex to me.

I understand Va. may allow combo guns for turkey without restriction.  Don't know about upland game birds.

Looking at some proposals for changes in the NC wildlife laws, I see that crossbows are being considered, and allowing any type of guns on public lands.  Good to hear.  Should know by July 1, 2009.

You should call your local game warden and ask him/her as that will be theperson in the field enforcing the law.

Good luck.
