NEF .410/.45LC barrels
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:29:26 PM »
Are all .45 LC barrels made from the same materials and of the dimensions as .45 LC barrels capable of using .410 ammo in 2 3/4" as well as 3"?  What is the effect on a .45LC bullet from its passage through the .410s chamber/barrel transition and then the .410s full choke ?  Is the rifling any different between the pure .45 and the one that is sold as a combo?  Ken

45/410 (#41C) barrels are 1137 mild steel, same as shotgun and rimfire barrels, all H&R centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy in comparison including the #45LC barrel, you'll have to do some metallurgy research for the difference in strength cuz I have no idea of the specifics. Can't help ya with the rifling comparison cuz I don't have both to compare, but my 45LC barrel slugs .4525" in the grooves and .4465" at the lands.

OK, so the 410/45 Survivor barrel may not slug to those exact numbers, but it will be close, right??  Would that mean there is a lot of slop for a 410 slug to bounce around in or is it gonna expand so there is little or no slop??

Correct me if its wrong, but I am guessing you would not want to fire a 45lc out of a choked 410 barrel, right??  What about cylinder bore??

So, you take out the screw in choke on the Survivor barrel when you are shootin' 45's.  Does it lead up the threads and give you problems the next time you screw it in for shot shells??

The reason I asked was because I needed the maximum strength .45 cal. barrel  and Quick's answer showed me the difference in alloys and that, for my purpose, I had best go with the .45 LC specific barrel. Its choice also eliminates the effect of the full choke in a .410 barrel.    Ken

Nope, the threads are recessed compared to the rest of the bore. I do clean and put antiseize lube on the tube when I change it out though. I do this for all my chokes though.
