New rifle help.
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:39:08 PM »
Hey guys I'm looking for a new rifle. Want something I can use for deer and varmints. Budget is $600. Any suggestions on what I should get. Not interested in Savages, Marlin or the Stevens rifles.
Also interested in 243 caliber but not dead set on it.
Thanks

I just got a 7mm mag Weatherby vanguard with leupold bases for $430. I love it, I shoot the heavy mag 139gr. hornady's and shoot half inch all day.

First, check out the used market.  I have Ruger M77 and Remington M700 rifles that were in like new condition when I purchased them for $350 or less, leaving plenty of money for a scope.

For scopes the used market is also a good way to go - most of my Leupolds were bought used and work fine.  The new scopes I've been buying are Burris Fullfield II's with Ballistic Plex reticle.  Using  the "Buy now" prices, Burris FFII BP 3-9x scopes are available for about $150 and the 4.5-14xAO I bought ran $250.

The Savage rifles are an excellent value but you say you don't want one.  Your loss.  They tend to be great shooters.

My choice for a new rifle would be Ruger or Remington, in that order, but I'm an unabashed Ruger fan and have a safe full of them.

For cartridges, I would look at the .25-06, which I consider the best dual-purpose cartridge available for the person that doesn't handload.

$600 total is not a lot for a new rifle.
I would look in the used rack at the local shop for a rifle with scope already mounted.
If you already have optics, I would look at the Howa rifles.  Optics are going to be a problem too depending on what and how you hunt.
Weatherby has a 399.00 Howa rifle, the Vanguard. on sale.
As to caliber.  I like 308.  I think it is a more versital round and is available in at least two weights and or bullet designs at most every shop, but 243, 250 savage, 257 roberts,25-06, 260 rem, 6.5X55 Sede, 270 win, 7-08, 7X57,284, 280, 300 Savage, 308 win, 30-06, 7.62X39, 338 fed, 338-06 all will do the job for deer.  Not to mention all of the new designs, wildcats, rimmed, or belted options inbetween these standard rounds.  But deer can mean a lot from the Coues deer of the south west to big mule deer in open spaces or whitetail in deep thick woods where a 40 yards shot would be hard to see.  Are you going to be stand hunting, still hunting, or spot and stalk?  For stand the rifle weight does not matter too much.  For the other two a 7-8 pound rifle is about max of what you want to carry in your arms all day.  If you road hunt, who cares what the rifle weighs as it will be in the truck.
As far as shooting Varmints, that too can mean a lot.  Are you talking a prarrie dog town, wood chuck, or coyote?
And generally a varmint rifle is heavy to absorb recoil.
I say get the rifle for what you are going to do most.  and make it do for the other till you can get another rifle for that task.
Heck a 17 HMR out of a Marlin 917V would make do for a 150 yard Varmint rifle till you get what you want.

Deer will be Virginia whitetail. Varmints will be groundhogs, fox, and coyote. Will be stand and stalk hunting. Rifle weight not a big concern.
What are the Weatherby Vanguards like. And does anyone still make a 7x57 rifle. Also the $600 budget limit is only for the rifle, already know the scope I'm getting.

I think Ruger still makes the 7X57 rifle.  But not sure if it is bolt or single shot.  either way not sure if they are in the budget.
The Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa 1500.  Same action some slight different options.
For Va Deer and wood chucks I would still look at 308 and use 125 grain reduced recoil loads.  For deer they work well.  for Fox, ground hog or other small critter they would just poke a hole through them.  Not big style points on the ground hogs.  But you can hand load standard 125 grain bullets that will give you the flips and exploding ground pigs.
Or the 243 will work just as well. but you may need to have two loads.  light bullets for ground pigs and heavier for the other critters so you don't damage pelts or meat.

A .243 or a 25-06 would do nicely for what you intend. If it's mostly deer with an occasional varmint I would go with the 25-06. If it's mostly varmint with an occasional deer I would go .243. My .243 shoots a 70 grain load for varmints and a 100 grain Nosler for deer. I shoot 120 grain Noslers in my 25-06.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.
