Model 94 barrel slightly off center
« on: February 17, 2009, 02:17:25 PM »
About 4 years ago, stopped in a local pawn shop to look around and walked out with a Model 94.  Checking the numbers, I found it was manufactured in 1972 and while it has definitely seen some time afield, the barrel is great shape and it shoots good.

The only issue I have with this rifle came about when I decided to put a Lyman peep sight on it.  The barrel is slightly turned clockwise, so it requires some fairly drastic adjustments with the peep sight to get it aligned up with the front sight.  Of course using the semi-buckhorn rear sight that came on the rifle, this is not a problem since both sights are mounted on the barrel and that is how I have it set up now.

Has anyone else seen this and do you think it is worth getting fixed?  While I can shoot it with the stock sights, I really would like to use the Lyman sight that I bought for it.

If it is indeed off, any good gunsmith should be able to turn the barrel in or out just a touch to true up the barrel and thus put the sight TDC.
I have seen this a time or two in the past and most people who have one this way don't even know that they are off until like you they put a tang sight on it.
Some still don't notice it.
It's the same as adjusting the barrel on a fixed sight handgun.
It don't take but just a touch to move the sight a lot.
You may have to move the buckhorn sight as well to correct for windage afterwards.

Thanks for the info LONGTOM.  I honestly did not notice it until I mounted the Lyman sight, although now that I am aware of it, I notice it even with the original rear sight in place.  I figured a good gunsmith could turn the barrel, but I was not sure how the issue with the cutout on the rear of the barrel for the extractor would come into play.

Are you sure the barrel is turned?
I had a 94 BigBore in 375 and the front sight was mounted crooked. It appeared that Winchesters tooling
to locate ramp when it was brazed on was bad. My dealer shipped it back at his cost and Winchester repaired it free.

BrianU:
You are correct about the cutout for the extractor, but we are talking about just a nudge really rather then a turn.
Like I said, it don't take much to move the sight a lot.

Ireload brings up a good point.
I am sure that Winchester would make it good.
The problem is that it really is no longer Winchester.

I think I would have a gunsmith look at it first.
