« on: February 17, 2009, 02:57:39 PM »
Got a good deal on 3 pounds of H-414, looks like a good powder for my 300 rsum.
Anybody use this powder and results?

Not really.  But I'm on an H kick nowadays, after years of IMR's, and bought a pound of 414 to try out.  Unfortunately I can't remember which cartridge I was going to try it out in...  :-[

I have been working on 8-pounds for a number of years.  It's flow characteristics are outstanding.  It is my favorite powder for 80-grain bullets in the .243 Winchester, and 165-grain bullets in the 30-06.  There are other good powders for these bullets, but H-414 has been the best. My only regret is there is a sealed 8-pound keg in reserve.

I didn't have great results with the Speer Grand Slam bullets in .300 SAUM in my Model 7. Magnum primers are usually recommended with H414, as I recall; they are currently hard to find locally.

its a good powder, IIRC it is W760.
I use it in .260, only complaint it is dirty

I use in it the following calibers with excellent results.  22/250, 243, 308, 30/06, 8mm and 9.3x62.  I find that it's a excellent all round powder.  In other powders you can gain some on MV but in the big picture it doesn't matter.  Try some I think you'll like it.

H414 was one of the powders I used to shoot in my 6.5 Super Bower, and I have shot it in my 6.5JDJ's as well.

I have to ask - why is it sealed in reserve? Lacking time to use it?

I used some when it first became available in Eastern Maine, a lot of years ago. I didn't have a good powder measure at that time, so I weighed everything anyway. I stayed with the IMR's back then because they worked and went through the trickler nicely. TODAY is a different story. I'm working out of the IMR's because I do have a good powder measure and not a lot of time to be weighing every load. I like the way the "other" powders meter in the the powder measures - IMR is not so good in that department. I haven't seen any H-414 locally, but I did see a can of 760 this past weekend. Didn't realize they were the same. I had heard years ago that it was supposed to be equivalent to IMR4350, but I have no data to prove that or not.

I had poor luck with it in my 300 win mag but I was trying to use it for light load practice rounds - and I don't think that's a good use.  I remember having some hang fires but there may be other explanations - poor primer handling, powder position?? Sure was a creepy experience to hear the firing pin drop then have the cartridge fire a moment later.

On the good side, it is the only powder that has got 165 gr bullets to shoot well in my 30-06 so I save it for that use.

It's a ball powder and ball powders are not supposed to be used for reduced loads. Never go below book starting load. It sounds to me like you might have. Pressures can rise to unsafe levels when you do that.

Is H414 and W760 the same powder.

Then the data is interchangeable, correct?   :-\

Makes me nervous just thinking about it, but it would be nice to know...  :)

H-414 is one of the ballistic kin's of WW760 (a ball powder with very near the same burn rate), so it would be safe to interchange "starting" load data.  (Yeah I know, but safety first always Bro.)

There are a number of powder pairings between the Winchester and Hodgdon lines. In all cases they are ball powders and I think all are made by Primex a Winchester owned company. Hodgdon has now taken over distribution of both brand names.

The only real difference between the Winchester and Hodgdon powder in each pair is the normal lot to lot variations. In each case they are the same powder made to same specs and to same burn rate they are in effect the same powder.

H110 and W296 are the most commonly known but H414 and W760 is another such pairing. W231 has a H pairing as well which I think is call HP38 or some such. There are or at least once were a couple in the shotgun powder line that worked also as cross over handgun powders. Since I've forgotten the paired numbers I'd not take a stab at them here.

GB - its been a long time but I'm pretty sure that I was using a load out of a book (Hornady I think), but it was for sure at the very low end of the range. I think I fired 2 or 3 then pulled the rest. Certainly it wasn't good. And all of them fired the same way, click .. blam. I recall being pretty puzzled because it was within recommended levels.  Don't recall checking the powder from the pulled loads - maybe I had a scaling error - I loaded with only a scale back then, no measure.
