Need some help
« on: February 17, 2009, 03:40:33 PM »
I am retired and thinking about doing some bp deer hunting and paper punching. I want a planes rifle like I had 35 years or so years ago. That was a .45 cal. made by a man named Tingle. I used to think I was a mountain man, now I am an oldman looking to have some fun. Any help in locating a similar rifle would be appreciated.

You're retired, why don't you think about making your own?  It's great fun and the pride in ownership is unbelievable!   ;D

Good idea but if you have two left thumbs like I do you might consider the Lyman great plains rifle.

I own a bunch of of muzzle loading rifles, including one custom made. But when I head for the deer camp I reach for my lyman great plans rifle's. I have both flint and cap. Must admit that the cap gets most of the hunting. Mine are .54 cal. You won't go wrong with the GPR.

Thanks guys. I like the looks of the Lyman. I have not ruled out doing a kit gun. I could find some time to work on a gun after my homeland security( cooking, yard work, taking care of the dogs, and machinery for working wife) work. I do have enough time before deer seasion.

Do the kits come assembled (in the white) or do you have to put them together?

Someone else will have to answer that, I always thought the kit barrels came blued, but I don't know that for a fact. Kits are also available in .50, Midsouth doesn't carry it tho.

If you get the urge to build a kit, you might check out Jim Chambers' guns. I believe the site is www.flintlocks.com. By the way, that's a good looking hack you've got there on your signature! Is it a /2?

as said above, he has BEST  if you want to spend money .

me, i would look for T/C HAWKINS IN A 54 CAL USED.

new they run about 599/699 ..THEY HAVE GREAT WARRANTY, FOR LIFE.

.45 is just a little too light for deer,.50 cal is great for deer and .54 cal is for everything, bear/etc.

.50 cal you can get supplies the most LOCALLY.

.45/54 are harder to get supplies AT YOUR LOCAL STORES.

me, only gun i like is a T/C HAWKINS.

2ND HAND PRICES ARE AROUND THE 250 RANGE FOR HAWKINS.

If you want another Tingle rifle, check the on-line auctions. They show up from time to time. There's a couple of fine Leman half stocks for sale on the American Longrifles web-site. One  is a .50 and one is a .54. These are semi-custom rifles at less than some production guns cost. That's the way I'd go and I'd get the .54.
