Have a 788 - .308 I bought new over thirty five years ago. Its still my go to gun.  I need to put the old Weaver 2.5 x 7 back on it as it was the right power scope for my use.   My barrel is 22 inches and it has all the muzzle blast I want.  Maybe you you got a good deal by telling the seller "no one wants that short barrel".

That is one of those carbines I regret having parted with although it went away as a Gift.
I bought it used and someone had it Magna ported so I don't know what the original recoil was like. I do know the carbine is still used and loaded with 180 gr Speer's for mulies and moose and it is  L O U D !

I wouldn't necessarily load with light bullets just because of recoil. Weigh your rig and use the recoil calculator to see what different loads will produce. The 788 isn't a real light firearm anyway.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

I never could get 125 grain Sierras to shoot in mine but about any 150 gr. factory or reloads were accurate.  The 165 gr Sierra boat tails were super accurate with IMR 4895.  I use Varget now and get a little more speed and close to the same accuracy.

I got my 788 from my brotherinlaw. His favorite groundhog load was a 130HP speer in front of some IMR3031. My fave, for deer, is a 150 gr Sierra, but I can't remember the powder.
