Which Powder for Both 9mm and 10mm both?
« on: February 20, 2009, 06:40:16 PM »
Hey guys, I am about to go pick up a new G20sf and a Lee Reloading kit. I already have a G17 and a bunch of once fired cases and plan to get some 10mm cases off the net. My question is, which powder would be my best bet to use for both calibers for plinking rounds. I dont wanna buy to many different things just to start out, as im already gonna spend a bunch on a new gun and a starter set to reload. I am a beginner so the primo stuff doesnt matter to me ATM, just looking for the most bang for my buck. Also, can I use the same primers for these two calibers, or do I need magnums for the 10mm? Thanks all. Also I know not to use hardcast in a stock glock barrel, I will be using FMJ's untill I can get an aftermarket barrel for these 2 guns.

I'm not up to speed on handgun loading.  When I want to find a powder to cover several calibers, I'll look in a few loading manuals and cross reference to see which powders come up often for both cartridges.
If you don't have any loading manuals, I would try to get at least two before you dive headlong into reloading.  Not only do they have the reloading data, they usually have great insight into the processes of reloading.  If you plan on using Lee reloading equipment, get Richard Lees "Modern Reloading". It is inexpensive and really covers how to use the equipment.  Some folks say that his reloading data isn't the best, but I like to have it to reference.

Looking in my manuals, It looks like Universal, Blue Dot, and TiteGroup come up often in both cartridges.
I'm sure someone will be able to offer first hand experience on the best powder choice.

I have had very good performance in my 9MM with Power Pistol.

In the Hornady seventh edition it is also listed for 10MM.

First off, welcome to GBO!

"I dont wanna buy to many different things just to start out"
Spend a few extra dollars on a good reloading manual.

"Also, can I use the same primers for these two calibers?"
Spend a few extra dollars on a good reloading manual.

To answer the second question, the 9mm uses a small primer and the 10mm a large so you'll need different primers and priming rams for each.

As mentioned, get a couple of good loading manuals before you go any farther.

I started with Universal Clays for both (I had some for shotgun). Then I bought some Blue Dot for the 10 and tried it for the 9. Worked ok for both, better than Univ. Then I bought some AA9 for the 10 - a bit more punch. Still using Blue Dot in the 9.

good luck,

I use bluedot powder for my 9mm and 44 mag. I always have bluedot on hand because I use it for all my field shotgun loads.

I've used Unique and WAP (now marketed by Ramshot as Silhouette) in both.  Unique for more mild loads, at least in the 10mm, and Silhouette for full-power in the 9mm and at least fairly stiff in the 10mm.  I suggest the Lyman manual as your first.
