baiting coyotes
« on: February 21, 2009, 08:22:34 AM »
I am new to coyote hunting and want to know if I can use road kills for bait?
Can I use a dead coyote for bait or will they shun their own?

Thanks

I believe road kills would work but ive never used any. Ive hunted over dead cows for them and killed a few that way. Ive never seen or herd of a coyote eating another coyote .

Ditto...Your states DNR would be the place to check first.

Here in IL, a road kill deer is legal bait, a night vision monocular is legal, a night vision scope is even legal (during the 24hr hunting that is allowed during the Red/Gray fox season-roughly nov through feb)
Any caliber rifle or handgun is also legal on private property
I use none of the above with the exception of the centerfire rifle.
Good luck & good hunting to you.

It's been my experience that it kind of depends on the locale.
If there plenty of food source around then sometimes bait isn't even needed.
Just a good call.

The middle of the winter has been more successful for me when hunting over bait.

Old Fart is right, however, we have some pressure here as there are too many varmit hunters and yotes are wise to a call.  Remember bait placement here is the key.  Figure out your prevailing winds and NEVER hunt when the wind is wrong or you will blow the site and they will become strictly nocturnal which they are anyway.  If you can place your bait so you can check it for activity early and late without being detected it will be to your advantage. If you park within a 1/4 mile of your bait on a quiet morning or evening wait at least 15 minutes before approching the same.  You cannot believe how wily these critters are!
Good luck--its a hoot!

Hello from Rainy Georgia,

I have recently heard of a new type of baiting for predators that involves setting out a heavy wire cage with a loud mouthed rooster. This works best right at dawn since the roosters will be crowing the most then. I understand that there is something about the crowing that drives 'yotes crazy and will bring them in on a run. Never tried it but it seems logical. I have however hunted with a guy who mixes his own bait that consists of a few cans of sardines mixed with a few cups of chicken livers and allowed to sit out for a day or two. W H E W !!!! Man, this stuff is bad enough to gag a buzzard ! We have shot a few coming to this bait. I was actually deer hunting with this mess set out 200 yards DOWNWIND and shot a female coyote on the first time. Of course, possums and dogs will come to it too, so be carefull.

The rooster idea is something I will try. As a lifelong fisherman, I know that nothing can compare with live bait. This same philosophy seem applicable here. And hey, after you harvest a few coyotes, you can always go home and have a good dinner of "Rooster 'n' Rice" Good Luck and God Bless.

Your right.  A coyote will not eat another coyote.  Not only that,  I've heard turkey buzzard's won't even eat a dead coyote.

you know, you never know how far a road kill will make it before it dies of its injuries.

A male yote will kill and eat pups if one is wounded the pack will turn on it and eat it.

I use road kill deer for yote bait. In minnesota you have to have a road kill perment to take road killed deer but they are free and you can get them from any peace officer. I just leave the yotes were they lay untill the next day so I don't get any sent on/around the bait.
If its worth doing, Its worth doing right!

The rooster bait is not new and it does work well on coyotes and cats
he needs to be in a "strong" wire cage prefrably up off the ground.
they make live traps with a chicken compartment in the back, if you want
to bring um back alive. ;D
