Merkel drilling worth ?
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:37:10 AM »
I held my first drilling yesterday it was a Merkel 16x16 over 8x57 jrs. It had what seemed like a spring loaded rear sight that wouldn't stay up and an integral scope rail double triggers and what i would judge at about 85% percent of new only comparing to the weatherby/browning type stuff . They were asking $1800.00 is that a fair price ? Also i have to say it was a very comfortable rifle to shoulder and point surprisingly light as well.

My guess is that the rear sight wouldn't stay up because you didn't have the selector set on "rifle" bbl...

"If" this drilling isn't all beat up, isn't loose and does have the "S" bore, 1800 is a more than fair price...

Is that a reference to the S in jrs? if so what does that mean?

8x57jr will be a 8x57 rimmed that uses .318" diameter bullets...  8x57jrs will be a 8x57 rimmed that uses the "standard" .323" diameter bullet.  Obviously, the "S" models are more desirable...

My 8x57jrs loves the 200 grain Nosler Partitions, and that's the only bullet i shoot in it...  I've harvested everything from moose and bear on down to deer and coyotes with that bullet...

Actually, that coyote was crowding 300 yards away, so the bullet had slowed down enough that it didn't expand too much, just blowing a fairly small hole through his ribs...  He went about 30 yards, and piled up...

Probably a good price especially if it isn't ragged out.  When I look around here in Germany, most USED drillings are pretty well USED.  If it isn't trashed the price is usually in the 2K Euro range for a used representative sample.  If they are well-used they are normally in the 1300-1800 Euro range.  New start in the 3000 Euro range and go up fast from there.
