Black Powder loading of the 45.70 cartridge
« on: February 23, 2009, 01:06:58 PM »
I am just getting started in this fun sport and need to know if I am supposed to load the 45.70 by volume or by grains?  I heard but have not tried (I am waiting for some equipment to arrive).  That 70 grains of FFFG triple seven will not fit in a 45.70 cartridge and that I have to do it by weight which is about 42 grains.  I thought the 45.70 was designed to hold 70 grains of Black powder and the 45.120 held 120 grains and so forth.

Comments please.

It will fit but it requires diffrent tools and yes you should load black by volume.  And I wouldn't use FFFG I would use FFG. In order to get 70 grains of black into a .45-70 case you have to use a drop tube, Which is a long brass, copper or alum tube case size bout two foot or so long with a funnel on top, you pour the powder thru the tube that helps settle it in the case you will still probably need to compress the powder(as it should be with black) to seat the bullet.  Triple seven is not the same as BP or any other sub I do believe it has diffrent loads to compare with true black but I am not 100% sure what.

Hodgdon has specific data for T7 usage in cartridges on page 33 of the manual, here's the download link.
