Don't think you'll get any answer out of that poll. There are several powders that worked well for me over the years with 165 gr bullets by whoever made them. W748, IMR 3031, H335 and BLC/2.

I had a Ruger M77 that loved 165 gr bullets and W748.  BLC-2 was almost as accurate.  DP

Although I have not used it myself yet for .308, I've heard excellent reports about Varget.  I plan on trying it with the same bullets for my new .308.

I use Varget for 165gr to 168gr bullets in my .308 rifles. It has worked out very well.

I use Varget in two 308 rifles. For 165gr bullets 42gr shoots one ragged hole for 5 shots at 100yds.

I have yet to use Varget but might someday. I have used Reloder 15, H4895 and AA2520 with perfect results.

The best bet in picking a first powder for the 165-168gr. bullets is Varget by far. Start at 44gr & work up slowly & rare is the time that won't work if your 308 is a good one at all. I doubt you have to try another, but the number 2 for me is 4064.

Damn, 4064, forgot that one. Knew I was missing something. Varget didn't come along till well after I gave my son my 308.

I've tried Varget in a 308 and, in my opinion, IMR 4064 beats it.

Varget!  My Savage 99f shoots a 5 shot one ragged hole with 165 gr game Always one shot kill on deer and I'll use it on pigs.  Varget is a powder that is not temprature sensitive.

Not to hijack your thread but I have the 150 grain gameking BTSP, and I haven't found any starting loads for it, my Lyman manual has no listing for it. Anyone know other bullets I can use the data for?

AlbanyCO: Others may disagree, but using data developed for another 150-grain boat-tail bullet should be safe with your Sierra Gameking 150-grain BTSPs.  I have never had any issues with using a proven charge weight listed for one bullet, in a load for a similar bullet of the same weight in a given rifle.  I do stay with relatively moderate loads.  A shooter experimenting with full-throttle loads might do well to back off a bit to start.

For example: I had a supply of Nosler 150-grain Solid Base boat tail .308" bullets a while back, and developed loads for both ought-six and .308 Win for them.  This was the first time I used Hodgdon Varget, and it gave excellent results.  When the last of the Noslers went downrange, I switched back to my old favorite Hornady 150-grain .308" boat tail, using the same charge weights of Varget.  No changes in pressure signs could be detected.  The Hornady was slightly more accurate overall than the Nosler, as has been my experience for years.

If you were going to go from a boat tail to a flat-base, it would be a good idea to decrease your proven charge by a small fraction, just to start.

To all: I agree with the general opinion that Varget is a superior medium-speed powder.  I used 4064 for years with good results, but Varget meters so much better, with considerably less bridging in the measure, that I use it in .223 with 55 and 69-grain bullets, and .308 Win, .30-'06 and 8x57 with 150-grain bullets.

Just a quick update: I emailed Lyman with a question asking if I can use the 150 grain Flat Base bullet data for the Sierra BTSP. They emailed me back that yes I can use the data for the BTSP. So, thank you for your reply!

Chiming in from Iraq...

I use Varget for my .223...outstanding results. It faired pretty good in my .243 and my .308. However, after trying several loads of each, IMR 4064 gave far better results. I was using 150gr GameKings. I hunt in South Texas so there really is no need for me go any larger until such a time arises, I travel somewhere else to hunt bigger game. My goups with Varget averaged about .375 inches. With IMR 4064 I was averaging .268.

I would love to know that there is an All-in-One Powder...it would make life so much easier. I guess for now, I am a 2-powder guy.

Thanks for your service!! My youngest returned from there last Dec., but who knows about later?

Heck, there is not an All-in-one powder even for one caliber as illustrated in this forum, but yes that would be nice.

My best results with the 165 gr Barnes TSX BT in a .308 Win.

Accurate 5744, IMR 3031, Hodgdon H4227.
