I'm posting Big gun stuff on NSSA D.B.
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:47:33 AM »
Since it would be a waste of time to post the same thing in two different places, even though I've done it a number of times in the past, I think I'll post the majority of the antique or big cannon items on the NSSA board, here:

http://n-ssa.org/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=24&sid=38d7b6ac99cc0016d83500cb35697a09

Items that concern model cannons, interesting patents, reproductions etc. I'll continue to post here.

I started doing that recently so there are a couple of posts on NSSA now that are more of interest historcially than for cannon shooters.  The NSSA board is normally pretty slow, meaning sometimes there's an entire week that goes by without a single new post or even comment on old posting.

When you have the one really active cannon forum on the entire internet here why do you want to remove your posts from here where they will actually be seen and post them somewhere else they likely won't? Some times the logic of folks escapes me.

John,

Post your stuff here and link it over there.  They aren't much interested in helping folks over there unless they are members of N-SSA.

I don't have a problem with you double posting the same message in two places.  A redirect pointer post to a news article or some such is one thing is fine,  but a redirect pointer post as normal course of commerce is a pain. Where do I post my comments?  Here on the redirect post or over there on the actual post.

I would rather not see a redirect pointer post to another discussion topic somewhere else unless it is something unique.

John,
Post your stuff here and link it over there.  They aren't much interested in helping folks over there unless they are memebers of N-SSA.

DD, I agree that cannonmn's posts should be in both places.  Unless you want to post in the members only section they accept anyone's post without regard to membership status.  I do not know why Dan has not been able to post, and I am interested in their response.  You will find however that most of the people who post on that board are interested in small arms not artillery, uniforms, or costumes (look at the record of posts).  If you ask a question about Civil War firearms you will get several responses.  Artillery is not a hot topic for most of the people that visit that board, member or otherwise.  That is why it is nice to have a board such as this.

Norm.

Last time I tried I was unable to post to the N-SSA  either. When I asked why, I was asked if I was a memeber N-SSA. When responded no, I never heard another thing.

I have been assured by moderator Cortney West that you should be able to register.  Try again.  You might also look at the FAQ icon if you are having trouble.  If you still can't register let me know, and I will see what the problem is.

I forgot to ask about people from outside the country, but I am checking on that now.

I was making a judgment based on the hits various postings got here and on NSSA, obviously it's dumb to post things people aren't much interested in.  It seemed there was pretty limited interest here in artillery history, and more on NSSA site.  Folks here like small cannons, models, shooting small cannons etc.  It isn't much more work to put a posting both places so if I have time, will plan to do that.

John,

I don't comment on the history much but I do read and enjoy it.  Keep it coming.

I for one enjoy the history, and the stuff about big guns.  And smaller scale stuff too.  But mostly full size.

yes I sure read all your postings and loves them , but often without leaving any comments .

full size guns are of course more interesting , but the smaller are easier to handle .
so both of them have their advantages   ;D ;D

 Cannonmn,

I'm interested in your info. I spent at least three hours studying your recent link to "crackpot cannon concepts", and knew nothing about many types of guns before reading your stuff.

Our little guns are based on originals, so I think most here would like to see the big guns you show to get ideas of how to make our models more historically correct.

Not knowing much about the history, I don't often have anything to post in response. I learn though, as I'm sure others do. Please keep posting about them here.

I forgot to ask about people from outside the country, but I am checking on that now.

Norm, some time ago I tried to register on a British forum (MLAGB) and was repeatedly shut out, I then got a hold of the sites webmeister and he put my registration right through. He said that there was no record of my previous three or four attempts to sign on and he really didn't understand why, he suggested that it might be some kind of "auto-filter" (I don't remember the actual terms he used) that wasn't allowing me to register because of the request coming from outside of England.

I've been registered on the N-SSA forum for awhile now, and I don't recall being prompted to answer any questions about being a member or not. I have never opened a thread nor responded to one with a post, but I just went to the site and opened one of cannonmn's threads and the site is allowing me to post a reply, open a new topic, vote in polls etc..

I recieved the following email from Cortney West moderator on the NSSA BB.

It shouldn't matter if they live outside the US.  They have to make sure they fill in the requested info in the registration process.  I see several failed registration attempts due to not being able to answer the union or confederacy president question.  Tell them to try to register again. You can relay a message to them to make sure they fill in all required fields in the registration process.

If anybody is having trouble registering let me know, and I will try to help.

Dan believe it or not the NSSA doesn't want to turn away any legitimate posts.  They want people to visit their website and BB.  What they don't want are spammers or people that are rude, so I don't know why you can not register.

If you will send me (PM) the name you tried to register under and your email address, I will try to find out what is wrong.

Norm,

We are past the difficulty of last time.  Last time I got a email saying my account had to be validated and I would receive a validation email.  When about a month went by and I didn't get a validation email, I sent the webmaster an email and said hey when?  That's when the short back and forth came "are you a member?", "No".  Also at that time my ISP was still South Africa.

Could there be an issue for non US ISP's.  It was a constant battle I fought when I lived overseas.

Today I got a validation message. So I Am in.   Thanks Norm for your help.

DD, Cortney said that it shouldn't matter if a person is overseas, but maybe it does and she doesn't know it.  A while back the NSSA went to a members only section, and you may have gotten caught up in that.  Cortney to over a few months ago, and seems to have a good handle on things.  Glad that you were able to register.

I asked the question about whether non-US people can participate in the NSSA discussion board, and I got this reply:

Quote
The individual should be able to register. We have several members who live outside the US. You have to go through the N-SSA registration process first in order to be able to post on the BB. You do not have to be a member of the N-SSA to belong to the BB.

Is the person answering all the required questions while going through the registration process? I am one of the Moderators for the BB and I have not received any emails asking for help other than a N-SSA member who also asked the same question two days ago. I replied to him stating the same thing to make sure you go through the full registration process.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thanks

So I would advise trying again to register and being sure to answer each and every question.

If you register successfully, I would make sure and read their rules of conduct, they definitely don't want trite, lighthearted banter as occurs on many boards.

Back to the original post, I also find the stuff you post very interesting, and since I don't know enough about it, I read but don't respond. I'm not interested in the rest of the stuff they may discuss on N-SSA, that's why I'm here! We get to see all the cannons and mortars, along with accounts of impliments, tool, powder questions, care and use, building cannons and carriages, and pics of fire and smoke! Please post your historical accounts and pictures here for us to enjoy on this very active and interesting forum! Thanks, BoomLover
