Brother, I'm with ya.  Quiet as a mouse.  Nothin' but the sounds of guns bein' cleaned, tents bein' weather sealed, and bags bein' packed.  One week from today I leave for 12 days of moose huntin', perhaps with a bit of griz on the side  .  I'n 39 years old and feel like a kid n Christmas Eve.

After that trip, it's home long enough to wask clothes, make nice with the ol' lady,  take a shower...and then take my buddy from Hawaii out to find him a black bear.  He was up here several weeks back, saw three bears, stalked one, and went home empty handed.  I said I was sorry he hadn't tagged one -- his response was "Are you kidding?  This is great!  I can't believe I'm actually hunting in Alaska."

Well shrimp season is almost over, duck season started, moose starts on the 15th.......black bear started today........too much to do!

Silvers are still going strong in Valdez and the last of the guests, might be gone.  Came closer to asking someone to tie the knot this summer.   Still might do it.  Just can't get here to go to shore on Hichinbrook after letting her read a few bear tales.

So it is time to get back a little bit to the forum.

Headin' out with my 2 boys (7&9) on Wed.  Been told that the ptarmigan & grouse are "thick" where we'll be.  I think I'll break the kids in on those.  I pretty much decided not to shoot a moose unless it's standing on the airstrip.  I learned my lesson about packing moose by myself a long time ago.

He wimped out on me this year.  You wouldn't believe this week!  Spent the first day getting set up and scouting around.  The second day we decided to go looking for grouse so we're carrying a .17 HMR and a .22.  High noon and the moose are parading right up the middle of the airstrip!  Cows and and sub-legal bulls.  About a half hour later here comes a legal bull that walks to about 50 feet from us.  We're both wearing orange standing in the open, but he don't care.  He just continued on his merry way like he had no care in the world making his grunts and feeding.  My kids eyes are as big as saucers!  Try as I might, that .17 wouldn't turn into a .450!  Saw several more cows and sub-legal bulls that day.  The next (and last) night about 8 we walk over to the airstrip to stage some stuff for the trip home and here are 4 bulls out in the middle having a little conference.  Two of them are kinda jousting around with their antlers.  It was too dark to tell if any were legal and besides we weren't even carrying a gun!  Down the strip are a few more cows hanging out.  Didn't shoot anything except for a squirrel, but never had so much fun!!  And on the flight out we spotted several more groups of moose making their way up the valley.  I've never seen so many moose in my life!

Sounds like you had a good time out there.  The kids enjoyed it too, I bet.  But what were you doing wandering around the airstrip without the .450?

Speaking of which, how is the Teflon finish holding up?  I found some rust on the barrel of my NEF, under the forearm.  Bummer.  But then again I think we have a touch more wet here than you are seeing.

We wuz grouse huntin'!  Never saw a single one!  The finish is doing fine.  I would think that it should be warranted against rust.  From all the hype about it you'd think that would be the case.  In any event, I'd probably be PO'd!
