147 gr RNFP , 9mm reloading
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:32:26 PM »
 Like the title says ,

Just picked up 500 of them to try out in the XD-9 and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on powder/primer for that combo..

Any experience or advice with this combination would be helpful..

That's a heavy bullet, stick to the book, and start at the low "Starting Load" end of the range.   I recently started casting some 147s with a Lyman mold.   I picked a load for Clays that was in the middle of the range which I thought would give me the velocity I needed for IDPA.   It blew he primers out of the cases.

Watch your seating depth.  Big bullet, Small Case.

I was able to work up some good loads for 38 Super with that bullet, but everything I tried in 9mm either tumbled or showed signs of too much preassure.  I went back to 125 grain bullets for 9mm.

I do appreciate the heads up on the 147s Rbwill ,

I will be careful with them ...  I had considered going with the 125 grain lead projectiles , but I am a person found of heavy lead for pistols ( 44 mag and spcl , 45 acp and colt notice a trend ;) ) for the pistol at home for the missus atm i have the 147 jacketed hollow points loaded .. That and 115 fmj we have shot at the range, and both 147 and 115 shot to the same POA ...  So if need be i could always bump down the the 115 grain to see how they run..

     Again thanks ,

I cast 147 grain bullets with a four cavity Lyman mold by the thousands. I use 3.7 grains of VV N340 with NO PROBLEMS. It is my favorite load. I shoot IDPA with the loads out of two Glock 34s, one with a factory barrel and one with a Lone Wolf barrel. They chron at about 925 to 950 fps if I remember correctly. I have gone as low as 3.5 grains of VV N340, but my Glocks spit the casings straight back into my face with that light of a load. I have also gone as high as 4.1 grains with no problems also.

Jim ,

Thank you for the input ... I havent used any vihtavuori powders to date .... But may have to give it a try , doesnt seem to be taking alot of powder to get them down range .

And that is never a bad thing...

Jimlakeside    Are you using the Lyman 356637?   What's your OAL?   I cast the 356637 and have tried several powders and haven't been able to stabilize the bullet without signs of over pressure.

RBWill ,

I had only 7 powder listings in all of my loading resources .. I had a generous friend that traded me two pounds of W 231 ... 9mm  147gr lead, Min. 3.3 grains and Max 3.5 , OAL 1.135 W/ Win. 231 .. Loaded up 20 at 3.3 and a few more at 3.5, I'll be firing them out of a 4" Springfield XD-9 .. I will be sure to post here how that turns out ... Any other powders I found listed I havent been able to find local to me and would have to order up to try , So goes with out saying that this 231 needs to work good HEH ..

Well got to the range yesterday and had some pretty good results with my loads

  The 9mm with a 147gr lead slug over a 3.5 gr charge of W231  did good at 20 yards , 3 1/2 " to 4" point of aim ( fixed sights on the XD9 )

Also had time to shoot some of the 250 gr RNFP with a charge of IMR4227 out of the Uberti Goldenboy lever action  ( 19" barrel )

Didnt have time to fire at 100 yards .. Though at 50 i was getting point of aim bullseye hits , And that makes old Default happy  ;D

Yes, exactly the 356637 mold. My OAL is over 1.14 if I remember correctly. I do need to measure it again since it has been a long time since I measured it. I have loaded several thousand without a hitch in my Glock, Kimber and Wilson Combat. Very good accuracy. Sized in a Star to .356.
