Yes it was.  Not hot, not cold, and enough overcast that the sun wasn't beating on us.  Now, how did you manage to get it embeded like that?  I tried the youtube button several times and it didn't work.  What is the secret?

Calif.  In the Sierra foothills behind Orosi.

One gentleman did a little demo of the muzzle blast and vent blast.  He set a chicken (dead, thawed) on a stake about 8 ft. in front of the muzzle and had a 3 inch thick 12 inch square piece of styrofoam in a bracket over the vent. The chicken was blown about 12 feet and had most of the skin taken off, as well as bits of powder imbeded in it.  The styrofoam had a depression melted into it that you could drop a baseball into.  And the primer tube was pretty well buried in it.

It is nice.  BUT - with the slope and the rocks the shots had a tendency to go over the hill.  One we could hear quite literally for 15 or 20 seconds (no exageration, it was long enough that we were looking to see if maybe there was an ultralight flying over us) after it skipped off a rock and went tumbeling away.  Good thing that downrange was just hills and meadows for several miles.

I kind of thought that terrain looked familiar. I used to have relatives that lived in Three Rivers. Lots of rocks and rolling hills. Thankyou for the reminder. Thanks for the info
about muzzle and vent blast. A couple of competitions ago here in Northern Kalifornia I was taking some practice shots. I smelled smoke. Looked down at my shirt and it was
smoldering. Some of my fuse had blown back around my baffle when I touched of the mortar and landed on my shirt. Needless to say, I lowered my baffle and it hasn't happened
again.

Subdjoe,

I'm glad you posted this vid, it looks like you all had a great outing.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Subdjoe,

Yeah, it was a nice relaxing day.  Learned that my improvised munitions still leave something to be desired.  I tried cans filled with FixAll, thinking that it is pretty tough and uniform.  But it was too light. And had a tendency to just disintigrate.  I had filled the cans, which fit the bore about 1/32 under size, to just below the rim thinking that it would open up into the rifeling.  It may have, but the cans tore apart.

I had also tried lead poured into the cans, again, thinking that it would expand into the rifeling. But those I only filled about half way.  Same deal.  And one the lead shot out, but the wall of the can stayed in the tube, which we didn't find out about until a bit later.  Finally managed to pull that out with a sponge.  Someone found the lead from that, it had expanded into the rifeling, but since it was so short, once it left the tube it just tumbled.  But it was interesting to see.

I did meet up with a guy who wants to get into it and he has a lathe and an operator for it. One of our people had a bolt he bought from Paulson, so the guy took measurements, photos and drawings.  So I may have a source of very inexpensive munitions.

Sounds good, subdjoe; Is his plan to machine a mold to cast zinc bolts in?

Just to machine some barstock. Turn it to 2.9 inches, put a bit of a curve on it for the nose, and maybe even machine in the cup on the back.  Or we may buy the cups, I think Steens is now selling them, and make a jig to center them on the bolt.  Attach with self tapping screws.
