Field Use - Breech Plug Hand Drills
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:48:56 PM »
Since it seems that most of us need to 'drill' out the flash channel of the breech plug now and then when shooting BH-209 - came up with a thought, but it was inspired by Paia on MM.

Here is his idea - he made this for this project....

I do not have the access to a great metal knurled hand with set screw, but I do have a wood shop.... so a piece of hardwood dowel, a drill bit of the correct size, and some expoxy glue and you have a field hand drill for my Omega.... (do not mind the sewing machine in the background - I have to share the "MAN" room with my wife, and the grandkids when they visit....)

and, then for the Knight Disc and the Remington 700 I need a longer reach so I do not have to pull the BP or the nipple....

The nipple on the Remington is made in Canada so it takes a metric drill and the BP of the Knight uses the standard 1/8" bit.... Now,all I do is remove the bolt and reach in with one of these...

These are just used at the range or the farm in my case when shooting several rounds in a row....

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I use a torch tip cleaner for the flash hole, and a drill bit for the primer pocket.  Great idea!

Denny,
Not sure what a torch tip cleaner is (I've lived a sheltered life  ;D ...guessing they're for a welder)... different sizes ?  and where do you get them ?

Thanks.... Rob

Most welding shops as well as Harbor Freight Tool are sources for tip cleaners. Usually come in a fold up metal housing so you can flip out what size you need. Harbor Freight Tool also sells a hand drill device that is like a small container (about ball point pen size) with some small drills in the inside. The end cap screws off for access to the drills. the other end has a chuck type of end that the drills can be secured in and it will accept drills up to about 1/8 inch.

I like the tip cleaner for the flash hole, doesn't remove metal (maybe some over time) like a drill bit.

Denny

RT, I'm in maintenance and the local welding supply shop gets them to us.  Harbor Freight or Northern Tool is probably your best bet.  Harbor Freight can be really slow sometimes!
