Who uses Lt. Rods
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:57:09 PM »
I'm new to this forum but I've been flyfishing for a bit over 20 years now and was wondering who all uses short light wt. rods and gear for trout? I'm particularly fond of fishing tiny streams for Brookies and Rainbows and my sword of choice has been my Orvis Superfine 6'6" 2 wt. with a CFO reel and WF floating line. The fish aren't usually huge but man its pure fun having them smack dries on this set up.

                                    May your tippets never snap!

I use the light stuff while fishing some of the wild trout streams in sw mo. I have a 7 ft 3 weight that is a blast to use for the mccloud trout on crane creek. But I fish the little red most of the time and a 15 pound brown would rip the little rod apart.

I would have to agree that a 15 pound brown could raise Cain on a light rod. Here in Western NY the creeks and streams I fish generally yield trout from 6 to 12, 14 inches with a good chance for a 20 plus incher. But the waters I hit the most are only 10 feet wide for the most part and the trout (mostly Brookies and Rainbows) are small and wild. A 10 or 12 incher gives you bragging rights on these streams. Don't know to me people who like the tiny waters, wild native trout, and small light wt. rods and gear. Just wanted to see who else appreciates this style of fun and what they like to cast with?

Sounds like what we have here. I like the LW specially when you might have to walk in fo a few miles.

:) Wade, this is my next purchase after my 9 foot 6 wt., most of my small creek fishing is done with a 7 1/2 ' or 8 ' Fenglass rods purchased in the early 70's. That is the usually fishing I follow, but a trip to western Montana.s big rivers made that style of fishing enjoyable also. Probably 90 percent of all my trouting has been on the small brookie and cut streams in the west. The nice thing with these is the solitude. ;)

I use them.  I've got a 7 1/2' 3 weight that I use on smaller waters, though I am using it more and more frequently on larger ones, too.

;) Since this post started, I picked up a 7 ft. 3wt. St. Croix Avid rod. It is a dandy on the small mt. streams for brookies.  ;D I may try it on some of the smaller rivers but for creek fishing it is a charmer.  ;D :D ;)

I recently picked up a 6' 2 wt TFO Lefty Kreh Signature rod. Can't wait to break it in. They make great rods for the $$$!

i fish a st. croix 7 1/2 foot 4 weight.  anything over 10 inches puts up a helluva fight.  nailed a few this year 14+ inches and i had my hands full.  good times!

I go out to Jackson Hole, WY every year with buddies and I bring a St. Croix 6 wt and a TFO 3 wt.   The 3 wt. is just more delicate with the small dry flies, and landing a large cutty on the 3 Wt. is a challenge I enjoy.   But I need the 6 wt. for heavy currents and drift boating on the snake.

I went on a backpacking trip up the Lamar Valley and Miller Creek in Yellowstone 2 years ago and only took the TFO 3 wt.   THe cutties are not huge high up there, and the 3 wt. makes it a lot of fun.

I have a 7', 3 wt rod, a 7', 5 wt rod, a 7'9" 5 wt rod, two 8'6" 5 wt rods, and two 9', 5 wt rods. I fish primarily for rainbow and brook trout in mountain streams and valley creeks. I use the 7', 5 wt more than all the others combined.

I have the 7', 3 wt set up with a Cortland DT3F line, hand tied, 6', 4X leader, and 18" Orvis 4X tippet. It throws 12 and 14 nymphs. While it is by no means a primary rod, it is a specialized rod that gets use in many of the small valley creeks where a big rainbow would go 10 inches, and a rare brookie might go 7 inches.

Now that I think of it, I never was as good as I used to be!

A St. Croix Legend Ultra 7.5' 3wt is in my small battery of fly rods. It wears a Ross Colorado #1 on it and a SA Mastery WF Trout line, sage color, is in the reel. I love that outfit!
