A couple things would happen with tarriffs.  First it would have to accompanied by a substantial reduction in taxes.    It would force the chinese retailers like Walmart to search for domestic goods. That would result in more American jobs.  (More American manufacturing jobs would be good for the U.S., right).   Note these are good jobs, not $12,000 a year burger flipp'n jobs.  This will further increase the buying power of U.S. workers as well as bolster the tax base.

As far as increased tarriffs on U.S. exports goes, I betcha the Chinese and others already tarriff the urine out of our goods to keep us out.

The greater picture is more important than all this, though.   What do you suppose will happen to our national security and military superiority  if we continue to ship our wealth to China and OPEC?

THAT IS WHY WE MUST BRING MANUFACTURING BACK HOME AND STOP THE FLOW OF OUR DOLLARS OUT OF THE U.S..

American manufacturing workers will NEVER be able to compete with the wages in these off-shore companies. Raising tariffs & taxes as a means to force companies to on-shore work will never work. The price to produce our goods will rise significantly and we won't be able to export these goods because they will be too expensive and no one will buy them in other countries. Not to mention, the American consumer will have to pay a much higher price further draining the household & economy of cash. America needs to be able to sell our goods abroad even if those goods are manufactured off shore and say exported from China to Japan. As long as the intellectual knowledge and control is here in the USA, we will win in the global market. Protectionism has never worked and there are plenty of case studies around the world to look at.

The only way to make it as a worker in this new economy is to get an education or trade and don't look to assembly line work as a means to make a living. I don't like this but it's just a fact and it's not going to change unless workers here are willing to work for $1 an hour. And I'm not kidding.

There's nothing wrong with Buy American, and consumers today have that freedom in many cases. Look at the autos on the road today. Why are there so many foriegn cars????? Consumers have a choice there and the millions elect to buy foriegn becasue they think there getting a better product for the money.

You may be an economist, and I know I'm not, but I don't recall having to bail out banks, auto companies, and mortgages in the 50s and 60s.  That was before all this "global economy" crap that has wrecked things here in MY country.

The reason we used tarriffs was to protect American workers from child labor, mud hut sweatshops that have proliferated since NAFTA.

I'm not interested in a "global economy".  I want to see American workers get good jobs in the U.S.A.  If they have good jobs they will afford and buy domestic goods.   It was sound policy 50 years ago and it's sound policy today.   I repeat, in order for this to work, there has to be substantial tax cuts and with our 50+% tax rate, we have alot to work with.

I don't want to be speaking Chinese or some kind or Arabic chatter twenty years from now just for the sake of the damned "global economy".    We don't need excuses why we can't bring the jobs back; we need people to put out a plan that restores wealth to the UNITED STATES!
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

You can't change the world or the fact, that we are in a global economy. What happens in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Germany, etc, has a direct impact on us and what we do has a direc timpact on them. Ignoring it or not being interested in it won't make it go away.

What we have to do is have an economic system that is designed to leverage the global system that is there. In order for American manufacturing jobs to regain ground, there is only one thing that will work, and that is you need to be willing to compete on the same wage scale as the Chinese. Thats never going to work with our standard of living. So as an example, if we implement a Tarriff to off-set the wage disparity on the imported product, yes it will create an environment for the manufacture to on-shore the production. However, that same manufacture will never be able to sell those goods abroad to the developing countries. So who relaly gets hurt? The American consumer and the compnay that is forced to make its goods on-shore here in the US becasue they will not be able to sell abroad.

Again, manufacturing for the most part is history for this country. The jobs are in engineering, procurement, operations, legal, project management, logistics, distribution and service. And when I say service, I don't mean Burger King, I mean servicing the products that are manufactured off-shore that are sold here.

There ain't poop, that any politician can do the change the global economic environment. Off-shore manufacturing has nothing to do or the casue of bank bail outs or bail out for GM, Chrysler, etc. The crapper we are in now is due to a colapse in housing and mortgages which has spilled over to the credit markets and exsisting business can't get loans to keep operating and new business can't get loans to get started.

Acknowledging the fact, that we are in a global economy does not mean we have to accept a NWO. I understand the desire to connect NWO and the global economy because it certainly makes sense that in order to have NWO you would also need a global economy. So I do understand the connection and share the same fear that the proponents of NWO can leverage the global economy to support NWO. American policy needs to maintain autonomy in the global political and economic system and reject moves that specifically support NWO from a political perspective.

Global economy can not be mutually exclusive from world facist rule. ..TM7

I agree with that. Today we do not have world facist rule but we do have a global economy. So world facist rule needs a global economy but a global economy does NOT need World Facist Rule/NWO. This I think is a point worth noting. What do we do to resist the move towards NWO while maintaining our place in the global economy? That is the question.

"Nearly 100% of those cars are made right here in the USA and they are employing American workers in southern and mid western assembly plants. Taffifs would do nearly nothing in this case."

Where are the parts made? The cars are assembled in the US but the parts are not. Less than 50% of the parts in a Toyota assembled in the US are made here. I don't know HOW much less than 50%, it could be a lot less.

I recall seeing Hecho en Mexico on a lot of stuff under my truck.

Same thing with USA cars from GM, Ford & Chrysler. Their full of foreign parts. I personally prefer a US car/truck and own 2. But the reality is there's not all that much a differance with some.
