Where abouts in FL Sourdough? I read you were coming for the SHOTSHOW but lost track after that. If the timing had been right I would have loved to arrange a hog hunting trip if you were so inclined. Sort of a pay it forward that we do on our lease.

No Joke: Last night for dinner we had grilled cheese sandwiches with sliced tomatos in it. Also, a bowl of tomato soup.

And I did not feel as though I was being deprived of anything! I actually liked it minus the fruit!

Go figure! I must just have a low set of expectations. Maybe I should start complaining and someone else will have to pay more taxes so I can eat better going forward.

Makes sense, after all it's governments job to set all expectations for all people to an equal level and then institute laws, new taxes and regulation to ensure I get my fair share weather I want it or not or deservie it. It's not fair that someone else last night had steak. Either we all have steak or we all eat cheese. Thats the role of government!

Nothing wrong with that. I really like it when the wife makes grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. My daughter loves cheese sammys too. I could send her to school with mild colby cheese sandwiches and she'd be the happiest kid in the lunch room.

Kids in New Mexico ought to be happy to get a cheese sandwich. I've got a 10 year old, at 5'6'',140lbs, that would back hand the kid next to him in the cafateria,grab his cheese sandwich and eat it, after he finished his pb/j,banana,carrot sticks,chips and jello we pack him everyday. My 7 year old isn't quite so aggressive. Usually all that fills him up. so far. gypsyman

gstewart44: I've been movig around, mostly in Ft Lauderdale, then Tampa, Orlando, and Ft Ogden. Plus a side trip to San Antonio, and Fayetteville NC.

Just had a Spam and Colby Jack cheese sandwich for lunch. It sure was good.

Make sure you talk to your daughter and tell her to ignore the Liberal Socialst Pigs when they tell her she is suppose to be unhappy with cheese sammys....I'm certain, they will try and convice her that she has been mistreated by her parents and they should be brought up on child neglect charges.

Even if you added the fruit salid, your still an abusive parent. Just ask the expert below....

My daughter asked me to make her a cheese sammich to take to school today....she just wanted it on a tortilla instead of white bread. Hmmmmm afew slices of Muenster cheese melted into two soft tortillas and presto a southoftheborder cheese sammy.

She loves these and asks for them often.

I told my daughter about this topic and she said she would gladly eat cheese sammiches at school.

simple fix require every student to put $ in a lunch fund say to cover 5 meals and deduct each time they use one when it gets down to 2 send a bill home for more . at the end of the year return un used funds .

I work as a volunteer twice a week in a local elementary school. I often eat lunch with the kids, and have learned quite a bit about their home life’s, that said, I would not deny any child a meal if they are hungry.

I had a rough childhood myself, I lost my father to a heart attack when I was nine years. I remember well the hard times my mother had just to keep the wolf away from the door. I know it is not mine nor the government’s position to feed the children, the bottom line, the children are not responsible for the position they are in, and if a few bucks out of my pocket will brighten their day and provide a meal then I am willing to pay the price.

I view the children as a victim of circumstances, they did not ask to brought into this world, nor did they ask for their social status, they can do nothing to correct the actions of their parents, but they can be guided, and with assistance become a productive member of society.

I worked with a guy that grew up in the depression. His mom cleaned houses for "rich" people. When she would cook bacon at work she would save the bacon grease. They would spread it on bread and put on a slab of onion. That was dinner on some nights.

That country school I talked about..there were a couple kids that brought those "slam sandwiches" to school. They were orphan kids and I never knew if their guardians were genuinely poor or just cheap. In any case there were always some of us ready to share with them, an apple, cookie or other from our lunch.
Rockbilly; It sure isn't the kids fault if their parents don't care, and I don't think anyone was talking about advocating the starving of the kids.,.it was more about cheese sandwiches.
I love kids but extremely dislike don't-give-a-d_ _ n parents....those few that consider their booze, drugs or ciggies more important than feeding the kids..

When I was in elementary school at the old and now long gone Mechanicsville school I seem to recall lunch was ten cents at least initially which included a bottle (yes glass bottle long before they packaged it cardboard) of milk.

I seem to recall we could pay by the day or by the week. Some meals they served I'd rather go hungry than eat. On those days it was not unusual for me to run home and fix me a cheese sammich or any one of several other possible choices. If I knew in advance I could even tell granny and she'd have it waiting on me when I got there. It was roughly a quarter mile or a tad more one way so I did need to run to get home eat and get back in time but it was do able and was done many days.

There was never any breakfasts served at any of the schools I went to. In high school the walk to the bus stop was more like a half mile minimum then several miles to school from there. For sure no coming home for lunch then so it was either take lunch or eat what they had or go hungry. I used all three options at times depending on what was served and whether I knew in advance what it was gonna be so I could do some planning.

On those days when I chose to go hungry my first stop at home was to get a can of potted meat and some crackers washed down with milk. I've made plenty of lunches as an adult even on a cheese sammich or one with ham and cheese or even an onion sammich which is mayo, and salt with a thick slice from a large onion or several from a smaller one on whole wheat bread. Peanut butter sammiches consist of peanut butter substituted for mayo and leave off the salt but still the onion is there.

When ya really go first class ya get a BLT. I usually go back for seconds on those.

Your dating yourself. Ten Cents for lunch! When I was in grade school lunch was a quarter and milk was a nickle extra. And yes, the milk came in the much more technologically advanced cardbaord version.

Dat's a nanner sammich. Totally different meal. I use peanut butter, mayo and sugar on them tho rather than adding jelly Might have to give the jelly a try.

I think some people arnt getting the whole story, Its not the poor kids who are getting cheese sammies(They are getting reduced or free lunches), Its the kids whose parents make enuff money to feed thier kids but find other things to spend it on besides the kiddies eating lunch so they are freeloading off the school and not paying there due.

Now we are apparently "uncivil"; perhaps some don't know that along with the jesting, there is a very truthful core involved in our discussions. I don't know if it is the country vs city thing or an age thing, but many of us were probably glad to get a cheese sammie at times..
What today is called the "poverty line" is well above what many of us lived through as youngsters..and I believe we are better people for it! Yes, we knew there were rich as well as poor..but didn't seek to blame everyone but ourselves for it!
In my own instance, with Dad & Mom working very hard and with a large family, after a series of events ...house burning to ground, birth of one son with horrendous medical problems (before health insurance was popular) and the death of one child by polio and another due to a drunk driver hitting him), our family was not very "well off" financially for some years..but my folks didn't blame God or "the man" and slugged their way through, emerging on top about in time for Dad to pass away. The children all doing OK these days...thank God.
In any case, although my cholestrol level rebels, I still enjoy a "good old cheese sammich"..especially if it is NY State sharp Cheddar.. and

Yes, the Cabot (VT) cheeses are great, and I live only aboui 24 miles from the Cuba cheese factory..but this cheese from Woodhull, NY (IMO) has no peer.

These children are not being punished, they are being fed. If they can't afford the same level of luxury as the other student's...well...that's a good life lesson. If you can't afford it you can't have it.

Someone made the comment that they were fed better in prison. Hold on to your seat folks. I'm getting ready to be REAL uncivil. Prisioners should be fed 3 meals a day. Those meals should consist of
1. What ever grain based gruel is the cheapest at the time enriched with a tastless protien powder and fiber.
2. Vitamin supplement.
3. All the water they can drink.
That is all they should get, ever. No offense meant to anyone who has been in prison or jail. I have been in jail overnight 3 times in my life, and I deserved it each of those 3 times.

Being in education for around 30 years as a teacher and in other positions I will say this:
1. If students were expected to brown bag it I would guess that 10-15% of students would have no lunch and probably had no breakfast. This is in a a community of about 15,000 with low unemployment, not even close to inner city which would be much worse.
2. Face reality, there are many parents that do a poor job of being a parent. As long as anyone can have kids this will be the reality.
3. Kids need decent food (cheese sandwich, etc. is decent) to learn. If student does not learn they usually do not turn into productive citizens which cost us all a lot more than a school lunch.
4. If the kid's parents cannot or will not provide than the rest of us need to step up to help the kid and the parent that cannot provide and kick the butts of those that can but won't.

Ah, but this isn't happening. In fact, we are rewarding them for their worthless behavior. Last night I heard a tv commercial regarding our free, well-child healthcare program here in Iowa with the tagline of "because you've earned it"
How have these parents earned it? By having more children than they can support? By providing the minimal amount of effort in providing for their children? By making their children secondary to their addictions and habits?
Our government is punishing positive behavior and rewarding the slackers...I wonder which group will see it's numbers continue to grow?
I agree that our only hope is to salvage these children from this crap and hope they become productive citizens.

It just isn't the government. I saw a USA Network commercial on that spotlighted this graffiti artist that was going around painting Obama's picture on buildings and such. It state that he was a character and that's what they were looking for. He said that he enjoyed doing things that he was not supposed to do and it excited him and inspired him. WELL This lawbreaker gets his own commercial. The leftist progressive media salutes the nare-do-wells if they go against the law and what is expected of law abiding citizens

Sorry if this does not hold the subject line but it is an indicator of what is going on in this country today. Just as Hunt-m-up says badbehavior is being rewarded!
