22 LR scope
« on: February 25, 2009, 01:12:17 PM »
I gave the kid of a friend of mine a Romanian 22 training rifle.  Some how the bolt has become damaged and I can not fix it and am unwilling to beat on the pins in the bolt to get the firing pin out.  I am planning on sending it to a gun smith but.  Since I have a CZ 527 Pick up next week and the shop has a little Marlin tube fed in 22LR ($170 new) I am thinking of getting the kid the Marlin and since he really can not see broken clay targets pieces at 75 or 100 yards to break them up further with the open sights I was thinking of adding a scope to the little gun for him to use till his gets back from the smith.
So long story short.   My question is what scope at the $100 to $150 mark do you suggest?  I would like to have a 3-9 but a 6X, 4X or even 2-7 will work.
I really do not want a BSA if I can help it. And would like smaller than 40MM objective so I can mount the scope as low as possible.
Thanks.  I will be picking up the rifle Sat 2/28/09.

Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 is pretty much a staple for rimfires and it's right in your price range.

A little more power than I want But OK.
Will it look funny on the little marlin rifle?
Thank you.

WEAVER 2.5x7x28
http://www.opticsplanet.net/weaver-rifle-scopes-rimfire-rv7.html
Previously sat on a Marlin 60 that I owned and now sits on my CZ American 452 22lr.
It's a little pricier than some of the other rimfire scopes out there but I've been very satisfied with it's clarity and quality.

Personally I like a scope that 1.) meets the requirements for its intended use, and 2.) looks proportional to the firearm it sits on. The 2.5x7x28 is a smaller streamlined scope that looks just right on a 22lr.

I really like the Weaver scopes.  This past month I just bought three.  2) 3-9X38mm one for my Ruger 77/22Hornet ( replaced a Bushnell 6-18X40), and the other for a CZ 527 M1 American I pick up on Sat.  The other was a 2.5-7X32 for a 16" 223 contender barrel.
But again this is going to be a loaner gun till we can get the bolt fixed on his rifle so I really do not want to go too much over budget.
I have 4 other Weaver on different rifle as well.
6X38 on a Handi in 22 mag
3-9X38 on a marlin 917V
4.5-14X40 Grand slam on my Win M 70 Super grade in 338 WM
and a 6-24X42 on a Remington M700 SPS in 223.

My 4x tasco on my factory 10/22 does a supurb job up to 100 yards.  Got some funny looks shooting 100 yards with a 22lr until they saw the five 1" groups on one target with cci ammo.

I have used Nikon Prostaff's on several rimfires and on a hornet. There glass is better than you would expect for the price. That would be my choice.

Nikon Prostaff 4 power is parallax adjusted to 50 yards for rimfires.  You can find it for less than $120.

Another vote for the Weaver 2.5X7 rimfire. I put one on my Remington 541, replacing the 4X leupold that had been on it. Not that anything was wrong with the leupold, I just wanted more power. The Weaver holds its own very well.

Thank you for all your responses.
I grabbed a Simmons 3-9X3? when i was in the shop on Sat.  Only rimfire scope he had on the shelf under 100.  Yes, I cheaped out.  It is a tempory rifle after all.
So I will mount it see how it works and let the friends kid use it as well as other kids for target and hunting.
But while I was there picking up my CZ 527 American I was looking at the CZ 452 16" American.  Neat little rifle so that will be my next toy in a couple of months.  I think the Weaver 2.5-7X32 will be perfect for it.
Thank you for all of your ideas.
