.270 Win 19" barrel
« on: February 25, 2009, 04:38:02 PM »
I bought a M700 BDL .270 with a 19" barrel at a gunshow, with the intent of rebarreling it.  Before I do that, does anyone have this cartridge/BL combination, and how do you like it as a hunting rifle?  I haven't fired it yet;  I have a crony, reload and do a lot of load development, range firing, etc.

The velocity reduction from a 3000 FPS 130 gr load would probably be @200 FPS.  Hornaday lists the cartridge in the Encore pistol tables, I'd expect quite a flash/bang.  What do you think?

I've got a BAR .270 with a 19 or 20 " barrel.  Got a real deal on it after the previous owner hacked off the barrel & crowned it with a big mill bastard file.  I recrowned it & it works fine in Wisconsin.  My .270 Tikka has a longer barrel but deer don't seem to care.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

My opinion - it should be great! I like carbines!
When the 7mm-08 hit the market in a carbine, a lot was written about FPS loss due to short barrel. I read in one of the magazines of the time an extensive handloading project resulting in very close ballistics to factory ammo in a 22" barrel. You are a handloader, so with your Chrony and some development, you should be able to close the gap on your expected loss of fps and be very happy.

My 8mmx57 carbine (18") will run very close to the big guys with BallC2, H335, IMR3031, and on. Just read Al Miller's article on the 8mmx57 in Rifle magazine and my Chrony records are very close to his velocities, but not with the same powders. It took a lot of research, but sure was fun to see that Chrony light up with those neat numbers that tell me I've arrived! I don't get the performance out of slow powders that the long-barrel guys get, but the short barrel can tweak the most out of quicker powders and keeps me very happy!

My Dad's 30-06 wears a 20" Barrel. It has a tight chamber and runs factory ammo and our handloads the same as my Remington 700 with a 22" barrel - velocities are less than 20fps different - that equals no difference.

Good luck with your project and let us know what happens.

Thanks, guys!  That short barrel is sure handy!  I'll post results when I shoot it.  It's windy, and that makes it colder than X here in South Dakota;  dampens enthusiasm for the range.

Most .270s have a 22" barrel so your only 3" short which = about 75fps in a 270.  Chet Brown, owner of Brown Precision Stocks,  favorite hunting gun is a .270 with a 20" barrel.
He makes and sells a lot of those to sheep hunter and others who like light rifles.  No animal will ever know that it was shot with an inch shorter barrel.

I have a .270 Win chambered rifle witha 20" barrel and it shoots fine. I do however now load medium burning rate powders like H-380 which reduces muzzle flash. With the normal slow burners used for the 270 Win cartridge the muzzle flash was impressive to say the least.

My hunting partner shot a .270 Rem 700 carbine with a 20" barrel for years.  Not only untold numbers of deer he slew with it, but 9 elk as well.  Bringing it into a warm cabin from cold weather a zillion times and lack of maintenance finally resulted in a corroded chamber and he can no longer use it.  I don't think my buddy could guess within 1000 ft per second what the muzzle velocity was.  All he knows is that it worked for him and he really liked that rifle.  I had a 20" Model 70 in .30-06.  I gave it to my son-in-law.  I liked the way it handled in the deer woods and I believe the velocity loss was about 60 fps as compared to a 22" barrel.

My hunting buddy has a model 70 carbine and it is 19 or 20 inch barrel ,he has used it for 20 years and lots of dear with shots out to 300 yards and he loves that rifle .This rifle has a good muzzle flash like a cannon when he shoots it.
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.
