looking for pics...
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:43:26 AM »
okay, here's the deal.  I bought a new 23" 6.8 bull barrel.  My original thought was to cut it back to 18" to make it even more handy in a stand.  Now, I'm thinking to leave it at 23" since a TC is shorter than a comparably barrelled bolt gun anyway.  Since I have about a month before I even get my hands on it, I'm wondering if anyone has some pics of short barrelled vs long barrelled T/C's that I could look at to give me a better idea of what I want to do.  If I decide to have it cut back, I'll try to have it shipped out soon so maybe I can get it back before I'm on leave.   Thanks in advance...

Here's a pic of my 21" 17 Rem bbl. It's the only pic I have handy.

Wow, that only took 3 tries to make it work. Not bad for me

 ;D

I'll take a couple more and post them later, I have a shorty and a 23" full bull (like yours) I can put on and take pix of...

OK,

Here's an 18" custom 6x47 (I "borrowed" the scope to my 17 Rem bbl for testing).

Here's a 20" 45 Colt Van Horn bull barrel

Here's a 23" factory 17 HMR bbl, same profile as your 6.8 bbl.

Hey, I recognize a couple of those barrels Chris.   ;)

Here's a couple of carbine config pics I had handy without digging to find the pics of all the other carbines I've owned...

Hey Larry,

Good to see you vertical.

Yup I figured you'd know 2 of those. (thanks!)

Sure do like that stock set on your bullberry! Is that a bullberry set, or someone else's? Tiger maple, or ?

As you can see, I'm barrel rich, and scope poor. Still need 3 more rifle scopes, and 1 more handgun scope to cover what I have now. Plus I just about have myself talked in to a 375 JDJ rifle barrel. That'll bring me up to 11 bbls.

Ohh... man... I was okay until that Bulberry beauty came up!!!  Still not sure if I'll go really short or not but after seeing the 20" Bulberry I'm pretty sure that's where I'm going.  Now all I have to do if find someone who can get the job done quickly.  Preferably someone in Oklahoma or Kentucky.  Any ideas?

Chris - It's a Bullberry set Fred made special for me from his personal private stash of exhibition wood to commemorate this being the first Hummer test barrel.   Set is Spalted Curly Oak with Rosewood caps, and the set is as heavy as a 1949 Mercury Monterey Lead Sled.    Even offhand it hangsvery solidly and the crosshairs don't budge at the shot even with my centerfire 17 wildcats.   You'll get there on the scopes once you actually get some barrels (11 = kiddie cruiser  ;)) and you'll have backups.    I think I always had about 12-15 backup scopes (probably 30 or more now that I have been selling barrels).   Have had four SSK 375JDJ's, all 14", and they were my all time favorite Contender barrels.   Don't know if I'd want one in carbine length though... just too much fun as a pistol.

NGH - FWIW, all the carbine barrels Bullberry made for me the last 15 years have been 20".    Fred (and I agree) considers the 20" to be about the optimum barrel length for most calibers on the Contenders due to its very slow lock time.    As you've already determined, the short action of the TC's gives you a very short carbine even with 20"/21" barrels and they work well in heavy brush.

Any competent gunsmith or machinnist ought to be able to chop and recrown a barrel in short order for you... doesn't have to be a TC barrel shop.

I'm settled on a 20" barrel.  Now I just have to find someone to do the work.  I'll need to find a shortened stock as well.  Man, you guys have some darned nice TC's... I'm jealous...

I prefer to call it a target rifle that doesn't require earplugs or a hunting rifle that won't disturb the neighbors.

I took a 308 bull and cut it back 2" at a time.
Went back to 16.5 as it was shooting about the same and its my 50 to 100 yard gun.

Wow, all of the above short barreled rifles are very nice. They all look really cool and I bet shoot even better.
