700 extractor replacement - original or go with Sako

The extractor on my 700 280ai need to be replaced. Should I just buy a new one from Brownells and install it myself, or send it out to have the Sako style extractor installed?. Is the Sako style that much better? This is my primary rifle and gets a ton of use so I would like to go the best possible route. Is there any negative issues about converting to the sako style? I guess I should mention my extractor is the older riveted type.
If I decide to have the Sako style installed, can anyone recommend a good 'smith to do this?

Some believe the Remington extractor design is weak and I have had problems with them, but then I've also seen problems with the Winchester claw extractors and even the vaunted Mauser M98.  There are literally millions of Remington rifles out there using this extractor and most work quite well.  They are a bit tough to install but are relatively cheap and most smiths keep several of them on hand.  The Sako(or M-16) style extractor is probably better but it does negate the '3 rings of steel' Remington advertises as being around the case head.  This seal is a good idea and the Remington rifles don't handle excaping high pressure gas as well as some other actions..  Installing the Sako style extractors requires milling the bolt and this will most certainly void any warrantee and there is the fairly high cost.  We won't even discuss what happens if the mill operator has a brain burp.  I personnally would stay with the Remington extractor, you must decide on your own.

I agree exactly with the moderator.  He is on the money. Milling must be exact. I have always been afraid of the stock extractor breaking in a competition match but it never did. I have shot one of my 700's for eight years, over 2000 rds. and never had a broken extractor.  I have a Sako extractor which I was going to replace the stock one with, but never had to.  I like the ring of steel idea and for a hunting rifle, I'll advise against replacing the stock one. Dave Tooley will install the Sako for you but he is in NorCarolina.  Bob Hart in Penn will do it also. I can attest to their good work along this line. Still, I wouldn't do it. Expect to get a bad look from your gunsmith when you ask him to replace the stock extractor.  I have one in my shop, doing a 742 now and I hate it.  :x  I've never seen a Sako extractor break but I have seen  Remington extractors break but not many compared to the amount of use they get.

The stock extractor has worked fine for me on my across-the-course match rifle, now on its second barrel. The first barrel (a Krieger) got set back twice before I retired it.

The Sako/M16 extractor has been a popular mod for quite a while - long enough to learn that they take flight FAST when an ammo mishap occurs. :eek:

I'll just stick with the factory part, thanks.

A local 'smith told me the #1 reason the factory extractors fail is hot handloads. He had replaced several at the time he told me this. He also commented he broke several trying to get the rivit in the old type. Dave
