FAQs Throating 45-70 question.
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:46:07 AM »
In the FAQs there's a thread about the Linda Lovelace throats for 45-70 , I have a BC with the standard throat, I would like to know if I can use bullets bigger than 300gr without problems? I'm really interested in the 500gr bullets. ???

The only way you'll know is check the bullet you want to load and see how long in can be loaded, make one of Fred M's COL tools as shown in the FAQs.

Mine wouldn't handle any standard bullet over 405 without throating.

I can say JB Young has some 550 gr bullets specificlly made for short throated guns, called Crater-II's.  They have a slightly smaller diameter past the crimp groove to fit the short throat.

If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

The Crater-2 and Crater-Lite-2 bullets are bore-riders, great bullets for short throated rifles, very accurate if the bore-rider part is sized right!!  I'm working with 325gr .380" cast bullets sizing the nose down so they're bore-riders for my 38-55 Target. ;)

Buster, I see no issues with a stock BC and 500+ gr bullets.  I regularly shooter 535gr Postells with excellent accuracy on Rams at 500m.  Even put a few other 500gr bullets on a 1000yd target.

Thanks John Boy that's good news.
