I.D. make of this Mauser
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:20:05 PM »
.I am in possession of a sporterized Mauser (hope to own) but I cannot figure out what type it originally was. It has been rebarreled so that doesn't help. My Mauser expert buddy has looked at it too and is stumped as well. It definitely is not a 98 or a Swede; I know because I have both. The top of the receiver looks as if it has been scrubbed so that it is of no help. Other than some serial #'s and proof marks there is only one possible "clue",if it means anything. On the right side of the receiver there is a Z with a circle around it. Oh yea, the bolt has the distinctive Swede crown on it so my buddy's best guess is a replacement bolt, mine too. Any guesses or positive truths?   Kix

Kix,

I'm no Mauser expert, but the Z inside the circle would seem to indicate that at least parts of it were made at the Czech Zastava factory. I'd look up some pictures of Czech 98/22s and possibly VZ24s or in other words, look at the Czechoslovakian stuff.

Thanks Skunk for jump starting my brain. I have a VZ-24 but never thought of comparing them, probably because I've had the VZ for over two years and never even shot it! I'm gonna be real busy for at least two days and then will get back to you with what I find. Thanks again.   Kix

Kix,

Yes, please do report back on what you find. Always interesting to hear the results of a good investigation.

Pics would be a great help as.

Does it cock on closing or opening?  What is the diameter of the front of the reciever?

Hey Skunk,Troyboy and Billy. Well, tonite I brought out the VZ and could not for the life of me get the barrel band off to remove the stock. Three types of penetrating oil and gentle tapping with a hammer produced only a buggered up bolt and that with a well-fitting screwdriver. Frustrated is the optimum word, especially after looking forward to maybe solving the mystery. I knew pics. would be requested;however at this point and it's been a long point, pics. are beyond me. But I don't think they would do any good;the safety has been altered and it really looks just like a Mauser,in other words a non-Swede. The gun in question does cock on opening though. Maybe tomorrow when patience flows and exhaustion wanes I will tackle it again.  Thanks again.  Kix
