.17 HMR on SB2 Frame
« on: February 26, 2009, 02:07:04 PM »
Is there any way what-so-ever to get the .17 HMR barrel to work with the SB2 frame? I currently have the .223, .45/70 and .243Win and I am kinda getting tired of spending money on that ammo. I was hoping to cut some cost and have a .17 for my not-so-serious hunting. As far as I know, the firing pin location will not match up but I was wondering if there is a work around that some one had figured out. Otherwise I am just gonna have to break down and buy that B/A Savage .17hmr thats been winking at me at the shop. ;)

The only way to do it is to offset the bore of a .17 barrel in a shotgun stub.  I made one up in 5mm RF Mag, (stimpylu32 has it now) and, while it worked great, it was a huge pain in the butt to make and I don't think I would do one again.  You would be better served to just buy the whole gun and be done with it. I just finished failing badly making up an offset bore 14 HMR barrel, that's right a 17 HMR necked down to .14, don't try this at home.  :( Larry

Ooo, you must be a gluten for punishment.    :o     Regardless, getting/making ammo for it must be a pain as well. Nice work. I really respect the wildcatter   8)

Guess we would never learn anytihing if every thing we did worked.  I have had a few that didn't, some were so stupid that I won't even publish them.  I am working on a 20-06 now.  Larry

Now we just need that .17-.50 BMG   ;)
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."
