question on 300 win mag recoil
« on: February 26, 2009, 02:40:23 PM »
Ok guys, you were right. This tc thing is addicting. I was going to buy a 25-06 barrel for my endeavor but I am now considering a 300 win mag barrel instead. I want something  that would be efficient at taking down a large mule deer at ranges of up to 400 yards. Now I know 400 yards is a long shot and that would not be the norm but if the shot presents itself under good conditions with a good rest I am very comfortable taking that shot. Just wondering what your guys opinions would be on choice of caliber and If I do go with the 300 win mag what would felt recoil be comparable to. I assume the flex tech stock would help tame it a little.

  Rough comparison;
  .300 win. mag w/180 gr---25.9
  30-30 win w/170 gr------11.0

   { over twice the recoil energy}

If I want to tame the recoil down a bit from the 300 win mag would I be better off going with a 7 mm rem mag.

So, what is wrong with a 25/06 vs a large mule deer at 400 yards?

I lived out west in NM and MT for 14 years.  The 300 WIN mag is by far my favorite round for long range mule deer.  The recoil isn't all that bad especially if you have a heavy barrel.  Most of my shooting out west was done prone off a bipod and I never remember the recoil while shooting at deer.  The limbsaver recoil pad on the Encore makes it quite comfortable to shoot off the bench with the 300 win mag.  Get the 300 barrel and you won't regret it.

I shoot Pro Hunter 270 win on all deer mule deer average shot here in Utah 300 + yds. I do have a Pro Hunter 300 win. mag I use on Elk and IMHO on the bench after 5 or 6 shots OUCH  :o but in a hunting situation nothing to it.  ;D Even though I feel 300 win mag is a little over kill for deer after you get it sighted in recoil is not bad at all! Then you will have a killing machine with a 300 I did however kill allot of elk with my old Winchester Model 54 270 win. ;)

Nothing wrong with the 25-06 at all. I love the caliber. Just want something bigger that can double as a bear or elk gun. thanks for the input guys.

I have a 300 WM Prohunter and the recoil is quite tolerable.  I would compare it to a Browning A-Bolt 30-06.  I am fine shooting 20+ rounds off the bench.  I also have an Icon in 300 WM and that is another story.  Even thought the ICON is over 8 lbs with the scope, its recoil is quite a bit more than the Prohunter.

Buy the 300 and don't look back. You can load it down if you want but always have the extra smack if you need it. I never felt the 300 was bad in recoil anyway. Most recoil issues are probably more related to poor bench form than anything else. Practice with slugs off the bench and shoot the 300...it will feel like a rimfire!!! All kidding aside the 300 is the most underrated caliber going. Load with 200's and you have serious knockdown. Load it with 165's and you have nice shooting deer gun. I shoot 12 ga. slugs out of my PH and I don't see it as being "terrible" to shoot.

Get a good Brake, this will tame the beast in most all calibers. But the draw back noise almost need ear plugs  in a  Hunting situation. I have Brakes on all my heavy hitters in pistols (454 Casull, 445SM, 460S&W, and 500 S&W, the Brake really cuts down on the recoil. really can tick every one at the range off. LOL Lou

I would expect energy has fallen way off at 400 yards

I have one and it is as accurate as anything I own. To me it seems like the stock and pad eliminate a lot of recoil. My 14 year old daughter shoots it and doesn't to bother her. But then again she is tough. It will be good for a lot further than 400 yards if you do some practicing. Group below was fired at 300 yards from my 300 Pro Hunter from a mechanical rest and hydraulic trigger with a 40 power scope. All human influence has been done away with. 2nd pic is the gun and my 08 bull

I hate a  300 win mag. No nothing about mule deer or elk for that matter but if you need a 300 win mag for it, may as well go with a short range nuclear weapon and finish them off with a hand grenade. I've shot em before and in the field you dont notice it much but it is hurting you anyway. at the bench I'd rather you just punch me in the mouth. Truth be known I'd only shoot a 300 win mag at something I was deathly afraid of(like that alien on the movie with Arnold), after you sighted it in!

A real man would sneak up with a wolf blanket on and stick em with a sharp stick or sumthin!  ;D

I have a 26" 300 Win mag with a brake and it is pretty mellow,my boy
14 shoots it also and says it kicks less than his 24" 270 Win barrel.he decided to trade the 270 for a 223 barrel and use the 300 Win mag for deer this year .
