watermelon e-mail
« on: February 27, 2009, 02:15:29 AM »
Mayor of Los Alamitos is resigning because of an email he sent around. Picture of the Whitehouse with a watermelon patch in the front lawn. Sent to a city worker that was black, and she got upset, and demanded an apology. So he is resigning on Monday. She must have gotten all uppity.
Not sure who is more in the wrong here, her for getting that upset over this, or him for being stupid enough to send it to her.
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I would say it was sent in poor taste.  Acts like that are the last thing this country needs right now.

Well everyone needs to loosen up and get some humor, cause you may have to
laugh at lots before this is over.

I see lots in it. Im white and a italian. If some 1 sent me a e-mail that was making fun of either of those I would still laugh. Lifes to short to not enjoy it and have fun. I think more people need to loosen up. We have enough stiffs in this world. If people would be more open minded and care less about little stuff the world might just be a better place.

Just after the election there was a Pittsburgh area school teacher that said openly in class that now Obamma is the prez they are going to change our nations flag to the Kentucky fried chicken flag and our national anthem to the Jeffersons song. Moving on up. How stupid is that for a teacher to say that? It cost him his job. Dale

It is not always the other side who perpetuates these stereotypes.

For example, last week the first lady said "There are some mean waffles and grits that are made in the morning that have become a regular staple for some of us."

Its been a long time social stereotype that black people like waffles and grits.  If a non-black whitehouse staffer said that the Obamas eat waffles and grits, they'd likely be fired and race-carded immediately!

This is just another example of political correctness and how it is HARMING our nation.  While it may have been in poor taste, so was lots of what the main stream media posted about GW - and they did it on the front page!  And the attacks on Quail.....

A joke is a joke is a joke. That's all and nothing more. I'm offended that so many people
get offended. My son has been dating a very nice girl for a couple years. She has two darling
daughters from a previous marriage, that happen to be half black. They're beautiful, polite
kids that I hope will be my grand daughters some day.
She, my son and I can throw these kind of jokes around without anyone getting in a huff.
We need to lighten up and accept that there are some stereotypes that are harmless and not
degrading. Smile. It's good for you.

I saw the same picture posted on another hunting site and didn't think it was funny. Especially right after that idiotic cartoon with that chimp getting shot by two white cops.
Just because blacks use that N word between each other doesn't give any other race the privilege to do so. Make a remark about a Jew and see what sort of reaction you get if you are not a member of the tribe.
Equally true if you say something about a Latino's mother and see how fast he/she gets fired up.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

I guess I find the jokes funny and enjoy them. I used to tell racist jokes to the blacks in my platoon when I was in the Army, they saw them for what they were and luaghed.

Hers a good one I heard, "I don't know what they thought was so historic about BHO moving in the White house, what's new about them living in public housing.

Like the jokes or anything else, it depends on the individual. When I was a kid, there was only one Jewish family in our little town. They ran a five & dime that everyone called "the Jew joint". I went to school with the kids, and they took no offense at that. A friend of ours escaped from Cuba. He could take a ribbing and had some great Castro jokes. One of my wife's friends from work is a self proclaimed "black lumberjack", because he's the only black that he knows that owns a chainsaw. And, he can do a hilarious "whitey" impression.....Laugh, it's good for ya.

http://www.topix.com/us/politics/2009/02/mayor-in-hot-water-over-watermelons-on-white-house-lawn-email

Here is a forum thread w/ a photo of the joke in question...

It's the mayors own fault for sending that out.  He works in a govt. agency for pete's sake.  He should have known somebody of color in a setting such as that would take offense.

You pay for your own stupidity...

P.S. I find that joke hilarious personally.  Also the text message going around that says Barak Obama... Just another African American living in government housing.

The same joke coulda been said about: The Clintons, Just another white trash family living off the government...
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Whether it's offensive or not depends on the color of the skin of the person telling the joke. People need to lighten up a bit. Life is too short to be offended by everything you hear.  JMHO

The real ignornace of the entire matter that the joke is framed around is that someone because of the color of pigment in their skin is going to like watermelons. Where that ignorance began is a mystery to me. I do not believe watermelons are native to Africa. I also do not believe there is any rational reason for a person who's skin is black to relate that closely to Africa when no one in their lineage for a dozen generations has even seen the continent.

I suspect that in an average year a hell of a lot more watermelons are bought and eaten by whites than by blacks. To me to find it a joke at all shows complete ignorance of the facts of life. Kinda reminds me of the redneck jokes. For the most part those who find them so funny have not the slightest clue what a redneck is or where the term originated.

Far too many things folks think of as jokes are so utterly silly on their face as to be preposterious. They are funny or a joke mostly to folks without a clue.

I suppose my play on words about people neeing to "lighten up" could be considered racist too.

BTW I heard one of the best Red Neck jokes today from a hispanic, I being a full blooded Red nack took no offence and laughed so hard I had to stifle back my lunch.

It's a bit to much for on here but if anyone wants to hear it PM me and I'll send it.

one day people will realize that we are one country, not one culture...
I am about as Southern Redneck as one can get.
I am "That Crazy White-Boy that lives in the woods"!
But, Some of my neighbors are Black and if some other
"crazy white-boys" came to give them any trouble, Whose
side am I gonna' be on? Damn skippy! My Neighbors side!
All that said, I have not got the mellon-mail, but the
"UNCLE SAMbo" one was hillarious. Or the one with obama's
face on stallone's body "SAMBO----FIRST BLOOD in the whitehouse"
These were creative enough to be funny! just like all the cartoons of
Bush jr. with the big ears that made him look like a Chimp.
Those were funny and I voted for Bush! Just because something is funny
to you, doesn't make it racist. One of obama's own people called
America cowards for shying away from race stuff ! I kind of agree with him
Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit
"A wise man does not pee against the wind".
