I've yet to see a .44 magnum that didn't shoot 240 XTPS over 24.0 grains of W296/H110 accurately. IF those XTPs are 240s try that. If it doesn't shoot them well I'd find out what's wrong with the barrel.

I once had 44 mag that wouldn't shoot XTP's 180 or 240 gr(not contender).
In fact it wouldn't shoot anything worth a hoot.  Got rid of it.

XTP's are the best shooting of all I have tried in my 357 max.

As GB stated, might want to take a close look at the barrel, JMHO.

something may be wrong with the barrel because i have tried the 200 240 and 300 with out luck yet.they were loaded hot to mild. the only 2 bullets it likes are 180 feds and 250 win. pthps. i can shoot them into a coke can all day. the best i can get out of the xtps are about 6'' at 90 yards.

I've generally preferred the Sierra 240 gr. JHC in my .44's, with 23 or 24 gr. 296, depending upon the gun. One of those many .44's was a 14" Contender.
However, I've owned 2 10" T/C .44 Mag. barrels (including the 1 that I have owned for the last 20 years or so) that absolutely would not shoot 240's well. For both of them, I settled on a 200 gr. Speer Jacketed MAGNUM Hollow Point, with a loading manual max. charge of 296. This has worked very well from an accuracy standpoint and kills game up through large deer size like lightning.

I'm not trying to be smart here but 6" at 90 yards doesn't constitute not liking xtp's. I shoot noslers, sierras, speer ,xtps, berrys and several local cast lswc (all hand loads) and 6 ' at 100 yards is a killing shot.  Try using a silhouette deer target and shoot for a killing shot and shoot about 25 to 30 shots. let the barrel cool between shots when it gets warm and then see if it still is shooting 6". If it is go hunting.  Look at the pattern-if it's drifting right, left etc. and make adjustments.
I use my tc barrel on one frame and an MGM 12.5" with muzzle brake on my other frame. The regular noslers and xtp's shoot best out of both barrels and out of my Super Red Hawk-9".  The absolute best shooting bullet for either barrel or gun is Nosler 250 gr. partition handgun bullet. and that gets me 4-6 inches at 125 yards but much of that is old shaky hands and old eyes. Once again these are handloads but I don't do anything outside of the book loads.

If your only shooting targets then I understand your concern but if your hunting your getting it in there. If your hunting try adjusting your expectations and look at heart/lung/and artery/nerve bundle above the heart. Hit 3" to the right, left, up, down and the deer will never know or live with the difference.

Some of your play or fluctuation could be the type of rest you use, some could be trigger pull, some could be your forend is too tight or loose. You could get a trigger job, a custom forend  or or a custom grip. I also use a trigger shoe http://www.t-grips.com/index.html. they help my stubby fingers
