Question abour primers
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:14:29 AM »
Just picked 800 Remington 6 1/2 primers, ok, so what?  These are "ADAPTED TO SMOKELESS POWDER", DUPONT  in a red oval and the primers are held in a nice slotted wooden tray.  I understand they aren't antiques and they work just fine.  I was just wondering how old they might be.

Back in the late 50's, all Dad bought were Remington primers and they were in the wooded trays with a cardboard sleeve. In the late 60's, they were in plastic trays with cardboard sleeves. That's all I remember.

Sweetwater, thanks.  I really had no idea of when they were packaged this way, I just thought it was intresting.

Neat Pic!! I just saw some on an auction site, SOLDUSA I believe it was called. I had Googled wooden primer boxes - just for kicks. There was a picture of several boxes of Federals, Fiocci, Winchester, and Remington. One of the Remingtons was a green box labeled Kleenbore, the other was a red box and it had a white triangle with Kleenbore in it. The description said it was from an Army contract and all the primers were in wooden trays. I'd say that takes it at least into the 40's and that's about when Dupont joined up with Remington. I couldn't find anything more definitive for you, like a date they started plastic. I did find that in 1960, they introduced plastic shotgun hulls. FWIW most of what I could find written with anything about 'adapted to smokeless powder' in several articles seemed to point to the 1920's. Fun Stuff.
H,mmm - Your pic shows a number on the side of the box like a lot number. You might send that and the pic to Remington and ask for some history. Bet they 'fess up!  Let us know if you find out anything.

Made me feel foolish for not having thought of this myself!   :-[   Went to Remington's website, I can't find an email address there at all.  I'll look more thoroughly later.  It did perturb me that I could not log in, "email address not recognized"  I didn't think I'd unsuscribed but then again I haven't gotten a newsletter in a while????
Oh, well.  Thanks for your efforts.

No problem Mike, I thought it was different and I'll keep you in mind when/if I use these up.

Thank you you thinking of me but a full box would be better ;)
Still an empty box is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick
