I just received some 720 gr. 458 diam Ranger Rick bullets and was wondering if anyone has tried them in 45-70? I shoot his 700 gr. 500 diam in my 500 s&w handi and really like them. But I was trying to find a load for the 720's in 45-70?? thanks for any info

How bad do they kill you on the back end? I have a 450 Marlin in a Handi and 350gr bullets are enough for me. Zeak

I would love to see what it would do to a 350# hog, and I know that dead would be dead, but can you imagine the trama to the other hogs when they watch what happens to their friend.

Just wanting to give it a try is reason enough. Who cares if there is no legitamate hunting/target reason. The novelty of the load and one's own curiosity is enough. That is why handloading is such a great hobby!

when I found these on his sight I thought that they were just too cool not to try. I don't plan on shooting them all the time just trying to find a load and I am not having much luck at that. Some have suggested Unique but I was wanting to try something a little warmer. thanks scott500

I can work a load up in QuickLoad for you, but I'll need the COL for it in your rifle, and the water case capacity to overflow of a fired case. Just a quick look, RL7 looks like a good candidate at 40kpsi and 1200fps. Just be prepared for keyholes, the Greenhill formula advises 2000fps for a 1:20" twist for that bullet, which is impossible at any safe pressure, there's just no room for the powder after that 1.677" long bullet is seated.

That bullet is sooooo long you really need to throat or rechamber otherwise you are just wasting lead. Depending on the throat of your shooter, the bullet is seated somewhere around 1 to 1.4" deep giving very little powder space.

In my 45-100, 2.6", I can use a 45-70 case and seat out quite a ways but still not quite far enought...0.500" seating depth...so I am debating right now on whether to throat or rechamber to 45-120...leaning toward the 45-120...plus throating to the 0.500" seat depth. Now we're talking major grunt on both ends....500-577 boys, eat your heart out....hahahahahahahaha...this thing will give the 12 GaFH a run for it's money.

LOL again...

The 405gr will do most jobs very well, but if you have to ask why....

? A VW will get me around town or around the world, but I would much rather be driving a Hummer or a 300 SL...wouldn't you??? Same thing....bigger, badder, better...

A 750 gr bullet at 1000-1700 f/s...SCARY...

Don't get me wrong...I just wondered if I needed some for some yet unknown purpose. Trust me...Need is not a consideration..If it were I'd own a lot less.

TIM..................What would the pressure levels be using this load.Would it be safe in a Shikari?

I ran the numbers thru QL with a COL of 2.55", 11.5gr is 918fps @ 46634kpsi, 13.5gr Unique is 1001fps @ 61831kpsi!! That's with default settings for case capacity and bore dimensions. Needless to say, I wouldn't shoot them in the Shikari, don't know if I'd bother shooting them in a modern SB2 even!! $:-\$

Thanks Tim.....looks like I will be staying away from them for my Shikari.Guess I'll stick with the 405's.

that was not a 50 it was a cut down spec ops m60 with blanks and a slugged barrel but he did make it look good

I should be able to work soon and get the $50 it costs for a reamer. Basketball is almost over and it's getting warmer...increased velocity and recoil soon!
