California never ceases to amaze me. Dig this!
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:44:09 PM »
California is doing to its semiconductor industry today what it did to its former aerospace industry in the 1980s: killing it. Astonishingly this is at a time when they are virtually bankrupt and cannot even send people their state tax refund checks.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2009-02-26-semiconductor-emission_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

First paragraphs:
SACRAMENTO — California air regulators on Thursday broadened their reach into Silicon Valley, implementing rules intended to cut greenhouse gas emissions from semiconductor plants.

The state Air Resources Board voted unanimously to regulate some of the most potent gases produced by the semiconductor industry, which makes chips for cellphones, computers and cars.

By Jan. 1, 2012, more than a dozen California chip manufacturers must reduce their use of fluorinated gases. Scientists say such emissions trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere at a rate 23,000 times higher than carbon dioxide.

"The chemicals are highly potent greenhouse gases. It's important that we begin the process of phasing them out," board chairwoman Mary Nichols said.

Because California has a robust semiconductor industry, the boards' actions could set a global standard for reducing emissions, Nichols said.

Oh, by the way, what the heck is an "air resources board"? It reminds me of all the crazy offices of the Ministry of Magic in the Harry Potter books. You, know, the Office for the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts, and the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects

I live & work in the Silicon Valley's high tech sector. I've worked in this industry now for over 29 years. I can tell you that there are few fabs remaining here in the valley. Most all the fabs have been off-shored but the reamaining plants will be impacted by this stupid law.

Now we see another reason why jobs are sent over seas. Stupid enviromental laws and stupid corporate tax laws all cause good jobs to over seas. The reason these companies like Intel, NVIDIA and Vishay off shore jobs is becasue they have no choice. Either find lower labor or go out of business. All thanks to the Liberal Socialist Pigs and the Eco Nazi's.

wait til the head wack jobs tax on those that outsource  jobs overseas  hits and then the only thing remaining here is the corp. headquarters. One peek at the tax bill and they'll leave to join the jobs overseas.

I was in San Francisco some months ago and could not believe the decadence there. The number of bums is amazing. I saw multiple drug deals on the street. I saw soup kitchen food lines stretching 400 yards. Man, what a place. Super high housing costs, but overall not a bad place if you could ignore the bad parts of it. Really a cool place to walk and jog. The lady at the hotel whipped out a map and circled the areas I should not go to.

It's a lifestyle decision, but frankly I don't know how anyone can afford it. The jobs don't pay more than midwest jobs, but the price of housing and taxes is mind blowing.

You need to do some research on the comment about pay. I have people that work for me in the east, Mid west, south and over seas. We pay alot more for the same job here in the Silicon Valley than in say RTP N. Carolina, Philly & Chicago.

Yes, when the liberal slobs in washington do that, these companies will be forced to move all the remainning jobs including management, technical, etc, overseas. Or the companies will be sold to foreign interest taking all the intelectual property, patents, technology and turning American invention over to foriegn interet. They will be forced to do this to stay alive or sell off, all thanks to the liberal socialist slobs, further destroying our economy all in the name of "fairness".
