41 mag
« on: March 01, 2009, 02:27:57 PM »
A few weeks ago I asked for opinions on buying a 357 max and that did not work out,but I received so much good information I thought I give it another try.  I use to have a 10" 44 mag, wanted to use it for deer hunting. Worked up a load with 240 gr XTP's and H110, but I have to be honest it was more than I could handle. Just purchased 14" 41 mag barrel and am looking for help. Anybody use one? What works for you?   Thanks

The .41 mag is excellent for having power without as much recoil. Depending on your point of view if you like heavy or fast, the 250g WFN bullets work wonderfully with a healthy dose of 2400 or 4227 behind them, fast go for the 210g GDHP or XTP with a healthy dose of the H110/W296

One of my favorite rounds.  I prefer to load to 210 gr XTP with IMR 4227.  The problem I always had was this combo would only shoot good in my S&W and Marlin and not in my Contenders (I had a 10" & 14").  If I used 296 or 110 in the Contenders they shot great groups, I just never liked the blast and flash with the 296 or 110.  All barrels are different though, so maybe yours will shoot the 4227, I would try it.

Just out of curiosity.  Why not play with the 44 mag loading and change it up to a 210 grain bullet or even a 180?
A 210 grain bullet flying at what ever speed is a 210 grain bullet flying at what ever speed and the diff between .41 and .429 is not going the change the recoil.  The extra 4" of barrel may add more weight and dampen it a little.
I have a 14" 44 mag for my contender and it kicks worse than my M29 6".  But I think that is due to the longer barrel building more speed, more speed with the same bullet = more recoil.  You may want to get a chrono on the loads and you may be able to scale back your loads to equal the same load out of a revolver.
Just my two cents.

41 Magnum...

Here's my favorite deer hunting loads for my 10" open sight barrel:

First, my current favorite:

210 gr. Sierra JHC
22 gr. Lil' Gun
Win (or Wolf) Large Pistol Primer
Mixed brass
OAL: 1.565
Feet per second:
10" Contender: 1,750 avg.
7.5" S&W M657-4 1,416 avg.
Scary accurate!  One ragged hole with the Contender at 50 yds
Current deer hunting load.

These earlier loads are shown for comparison purposes:

220gr Speer JSP-SWC
18.5gr. Win-296
CCI 350 Mag Primer
Mixed Brass
OAL: 1.580
FPS: 1,440 (10" Contender)

220gr Speer JSP-SWC
19.5gr. Win-296
CCI 350 Mag Primer
Mixed Brass
OAL: 1.590
FPS: 1,507 (10" Contender)
(at the time it was my best load in Contender...1.5" groups @ 50 yds)

Hope these are of some help.

I have taken deer with two loads in my 11" 41mag Contender.

24 Grains 296/H110 and a CCI 350 Primer behind a 170 Sierra JHC...1892 fps in my 11" barrel
21 grains 296/H110 and a CCI350 primer behind a 210 Hornady XTP...cannot find the velocity right now

Both of them shot under 2" at 100 yards with a 2x Leupold when I did not flinch.  I thought they kicked noticeably less than the 44 mag I used to shoot in my Contender.  I got some groups less than 1.5", some much less, but it was difficult for me with a 2x scope [actually 1.75X if you read the Leupy specs].  I will likely keep that 41 barrel for a long time.  It is a T/C FoxRidge matte Custom Shop barrel and I like it.

I am trying the 357Max right now for next fall.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Have not tried the RCBS bullet but would like to hear any results also.

My buddy and I tried a Lyman 210 cast bullet.  It was "ok" out of my revolvers and TC barrel, but not great.  We worked up loads with several powders but just could not find the secret recipe.  We ended up talking with other shooters and purchased an LBT 240 gr mold.  Out of the FA with 10" barrel, it will shoot as good as I can hold.  My buddy had a target with 5 shots touching at 100 yards.  H4227 is the secret recipe with this bullet.  Unfortunately, my last pound has nothing but dust in the bottle.   I will be working up a new load.  Per my research over the last year or so, I will be developing a load with AA#9.

The longer bearing surface on your RCBS bullet should be just what is needed to get you some great groups.  Let me know how they turn out.

I've got some non-gas checked Meister Bullets (210gr) I've not tried at hi-velocity...also not gas checked so I'm not pushing them too fast.

I have some similar bullets.  Pushed by a mild load of Unique, they are accurate and make a good plinking and practice round.  Good choice, Bob.

I 've shot a friends 41 Mag, they have less recoil than you'd think. I had a .357 barrel that had more recoil so, you may be delightfully surprised. The .41 Mag is a pistol shooter's dream- light recoil, shoot flat and accurate. This is one of the best Contender calibers a guy can own. And, yes, you can send it to me too!! :)

Cast Performance Bullets in 250gr WFNGC & WFNPB  W296 19gr; 255gr WFNGC W296 18.8gr or H4227 18.6gr; 265gr WFNGC W296 18.0gr or H4227 17.8gr.I had some corbon ammo with cp 265gr bullets for my ruger 4 5/8" 41mag bh 1325fps with real knock down power, corbon stopped loading them but a corbon tech told me he carried a 41mag ruger bh with 4 5/8 inch barrel with the 265gr loads for bear deterrant when hunting.
