7-08
« on: March 02, 2009, 04:24:36 PM »
Hello all. I'm having a Rem.700.243 re-barreled to 7-08 and as of this point I have no brass for it. However, I do have lots of .243 brass and I know .243 brass can be reformed. I am no stranger to reforming; currently I use .284 brass to make 7.5 Swiss cartridges but I would like some opinions since I would really like to make the 7-08 a tack-driver. Is re-formed brass just as good as factory? The K-31 7.5 Swiss shoots pretty good but could it shoot better with original brass? Can the 7-08 be just as accurate with re-formed as factory? Your opinions, experience and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.   Kix

Kix,  When you get your rebarreled rifle back start out resizing your brass a little long by not having your 7-08 die touch the shell holder at the start and then try to chamber the brass in your bolt gun. At first the bolt should not close or take some effort to close.  Then just screw your die down a hair at a time till you like the fit then load them as usual. They shold shoot just as accurate as new 7-08 brass, But 7-08 brass is very easy to get and not really to expensive right now so after load development you may want to use the brass with the correct headstamp 7-08 but to answer your question the reformed 243 brass should be fine.         Jedman

Hey Kix!

I use 243 brass for my .260 and would for my 7/08; I managed to accumulate a bunch of it somehow or other.  I also use .308 brass for my .358 and 30/06 brass for my 338/06 and 35 Whelen for the same reason!   :D

I have never had a reason to think reformed brass was less accurate then correctly headstamped brass.    ;)

BTW, I'd get a tapered expander ball and lube the inside of the case necks if'n I were you.  .243 to .284 ain't much but it's getting to be a bit of a ... well,  :-\ ... stretch!   ;D

Thanks guys for your replies,I was hoping to hear that. Today I bought a box of Hornady 139gr.Spire Points;that should be a good bullet for the 7mm. The barrel I bought is a factory new,24" in matte finish. My first thought was to have it trimmed to 21" to make it handier in the blind but the more I study on it I just might leave it at full length to really whip that bullet! I hope to find some factory brass but you know how it is-there is more powder to buy, more bullets for different rifles, better scopes for pet rifles and the list goes on and on. I might as well utilize all my .243 brass. And AtIlaw, how many years did I struggle to bring the expander ball out of the case before I learned about neck lubing, now it's a breeze. I guess there is an upside to getting older/wiser!  Take care.   Kix
