Rem. SPS
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:53:27 AM »
My son-in-law is going to purchase one of these in 223 or 22-250. Any opinions on the gun and the calibers would be helpful. He is going to be using it for coyotes and target shooting. He lives in New Mexico so I am assuming he wants to be able to reach out there. Thanks

I have one in 223 with a weaver 6-24X42 scope on it.
Shoots everything i feed it well and I have it sighted in at 200 yards.
22-250 will extend the range a little.  I went with 223 because it is easier to find.

I assume he is going for the SPS Varmint?  If he is keeping his shots under 300yds than the .223 is more than sufficient on coyotes and there is more factory fodder for target shooting (provided that you can find it right now).

The factory stocks are crap, they flex with little effort, allowing contact between the forend and barrel.  If he is serious about accuracy, he will want to upgrade, which is easy although not always cheap.

Forgot to add, the SPS Tactical in .223 has a 1:9 twist 20" barrel which is a good compromise.  You can usually get the 60gr V-Max's to shoot as well as the 75gr A-Max/Berger VLD.  Makes for a rifle than can take a coyote out to 500 or so depending on the shooter, and still hit out to 1K.  Although you will need to handload to really take advantage of these bullets, there are some good factory match rounds in 69-77gr (again, provided you can find them right now).

I heard a rumor that the SPS Tactical's were not being made anymore, I'm not sure whether it's true or not.  I had my dealer get me one a few months ago while I was still on another deployment.  It is sitting in my safe sans Hogue stock, waiting for a McM A5 to come in.

Hope this helps.
