25-06 contender barrel available?
« on: March 03, 2009, 12:49:21 PM »
Is 25-06 avalable in a 16.25" for a contender frame or is that only a encore barrel?

I would think this would be an Encore only.  I think the only factory rimless centerfire for the contender is the .223.

There have been many rimless centerfire cartridges chambered in the Contender, but no high pressure/large diameter cases regardless of rim type.  This is because the Contender frame is not strong enough for the back thrust that cartridges like the .25-06 produce.  But lower pressure cartridges like the .35 Remington or smaller diameter higher pressure cartridges like the 6.8 SPC are chambered.  Others include (or included) the 6.5TCU, 7TCU, .222, .300 Whisper, 10mm Auto, .45 Winchester Magnum, .45 ACP.....

It would definitely be for an Encore frame only.

That said, occasionally there comes on the market at gunbroker.com, Contender barrels rechambered by some idiot gunsmith to an unsafe chambering (if I remember correctly, I saw one for 35 Whelen).  That means you could probably find some stupid person to do a rechamber for you but I'm sure you don't want to fall for that temptation.

And if you are lucky enough to get one of these idiocities, it may even come with the extra screw holes so you end up with 6 screws holding down your scope base.  Might even last a few shots................  I heard this one did.........

Thanks for all your inputs. Looking for a carbine barrel for deer and an occasional coyote.Usually hunt with a 14" 7-30 Waters, but made myself a sweet thumbhole stock and forend. Now I need a little longer barrel.(Damn Feds!) 30-30 would do it, but I was lookin' for somthing a little different . Maybe 300 Wisper? Maybe another 7-30? What do you guys think? By the way I hunt in PA. Allegheny National Forrest. Haven't shot a deer over 80 yards in 25 years.

How about a 30-30AI  125gr Nosler BT's at 2600+ fps out of a 14" barrel. I would think it would make a dandy carbine round in a 16"+ barrel

I didn't find the original thread, but here's a hearsay thread on it.
