I am hooked on the military channel.
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:05:00 AM »
Do any of you guys ever watch the military channel? There is some very interesting stuff on there. I had no idea some of the weapon systems our military has. I watched one program on the Battle of Midway. Boy was that interesting. We had one badly damaged aircraft carrier that we needed in the battle. They said under normal conditions it would take weeks to repair. There were 1,500 people that decended on the carrier when it came into port and finished the repairs in 24 hours. The Japenese took very heavy losses in that battle and we kicked the crap out of them. It's kind of funny how when you are in school you could care less about history. Now that I am older I have a great interest in it. Dale

Dale,
I love that channel. I like you got more into history the older I got (guess trying to learn from it rather than repeat it). I saw it for the first time about 6 weeks ago at a friends house, went home and ordered the upgrade for my house so I could watch it more regularly (this coming from someone that maybe watches 2 hours a week normally). Good product.

When you watch some of WW11, I wonder if people today would sacrifice what our men and women did during those times.(I was born in 1942)

That was truly an amazing time in our history. As you put it, those couragous soldiers made such a sacrifice so that we could be here today doing what we do. God bless every one of their souls!!!!!!!

Yes the Americans and our allies over came a lot durring World War II. Hitler was close to developing the atomic bomb also. All I can say to that is thank God we developed it first. There were 150,000 Americans working on the project. If Germany had come up with it first the whole world would be different today. Dale

Yes the weapons systems available to the troops today are "starwars" type stuff, and the older weapons are amazing too.  But after 49 years (23 active duty and 26 civil service) I don't get excited about the weapons like I once did.

I have always been of the opinion the best and most important weapon we have is the young troops that operatee and maintain our weapons of war.  Great assets, past, present and future.

God bless the troops!

I recently got to know a guy from the Air Guard and after we got done ribbing each other over the different branches it was pretty amazign how much goes into every single fighter jet we have.  Kinda made me want to get back in a try out one of those fighter jets, but some of the new armored vehicles are amazing too!

I watch it all the time.

It is very interesting as well as informative. Some of the newest shows have contained information that had previously classified and now we are able to get to the truth of many happenings during that time.

As to the sacrifices made and to the lives lost during WWII it is almost unbelieveable the devastation of all the world.

We in America are lucky as hell that we have not had such devastation in our country since the Civil War. The horrors suffered by so many millions of people is very hard to visulize.

I would encourage all to watch as well as get their children and grand children to watch it as well as the History Channel to learn what this nation is all about.

This is a little off topic but my niece was Mister Rogers nurse when he died. I have teased her several times that she killed Mister Rogers. Dale

When my unit came home from Iraq we were welcomed at the airport by a group of veterans. A man wearing a "WWII VETERAN" hat walked up and shook my hand and thanked me. I said "you deserve more thanks than any of us, you guys saved the world"

Those old veterans are my heroes.
War was "harder" back then and I respect them for doing what they did.

God Bless all of them.

I don't know about harder, but it was the last time the American patriot soldier was allowed to win, with NO HANDS tied behind their back.
On second thought, tours lasted until it was over, and if you were wounded and recovered you were sent back.
Still, war is war, and a patriot is a patriot. My youngest did two tours in Iraq, and one in Afghanistan, and I hold him as I do folks like you Spanky in high regard.
It has been many years since the politician gave the fighting man an even break at winning a fight.

+1  The rules of engagement aren't usually fair to the US troops that have to follow them.

Thats an understatement,

The kids(endearing term) that go in the military now go only because they want to and they face so much flack, not from enemy anti aircraft fire, but from the left and the leftist media.

Wondering how the "wars" will be covered now that its Obamas war?

ER..... Uh..... is this on topic ?

It will be different to them in that there will probably be less resources and manpower available to them since there will be BIG cutbacks in military expenditure. Not to mention that their commander in chief dont have a freaking clue
not that "W" did either. And Dee I dont wanna hear 1 I told you so! I said that about "W" before!  ;)
