Send over a contract unit (i.e. Blackwater Worldwide, etc) and have them start up a grassroots rebellion in somalia. The only problem that we might see is not only do the extremist leaders throughout Somalia/Mogadishu bring in all the profit for the country through piracy, which FYI is a 13-16 Billion dollar a year industry, they also therefore control the food supply that comes into the country. The citizens of Somalia see the extremists as heroes and that they owe all to them. The people have been misled. Coerced into the mentality that the people who are really causing the economic and political problems that the country is seeing, are to the citizen, the heroes and therefore would defend them under any circumstance. Currently cruise ships traveling through HOA (Horn of Africa) are armed with the LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) system which uses sound waves to drive off beligerents. It utilizes the concept of sound traveling similar to light (in all directions) and focuses them into one sigular beam of direction. This is why you can stand three feet to the right or left of it and hardly hear the sound being emitted but once you step into the focus beam you are immediately neutralized as you have to drop anything you have and put your hands to your ears. The LRAD system is capable of rupturing ear drums at a distance of 100-200 meters with max effective range at 300 meters. Also currently employed in Camp Bucca, Iraq for use in croud control as well as prisoner control. Although this may sound great in effectiveness, recent action using the LRAD system throughout HOA have forced the LRAD system to be re-evaluated as to it's combat effectiveness. You have to think that when this device was designed it was for land use and when out on the water you have alot of new variables and mainly all of them focusing on the refraction and reflection off the water that the sound wave would go through. Ofcourse don't get me wrong, there is nothing better in my mind than a 50-100 man detail working the decks of a cruise ship armed to the teeth with M240G, M249 SAW, HK G36, (4 or 5) Twin M2HB's, and I suppose a Phalanx CIWS wouldn't hurt either. I'm sure the Coast Guard or US Navy would be happy to oblige. Military personel would be best for this detail being that they are not allowed to recieve gifts of money, etc in return for action and nobody will pay them for not returning fire. The most they could get is a combat action medal which in the US Coast Guard and Navy is worth it's weight in gold. So their options all in all would be a)not fight, be captured, spend an unknown amount of time in an enemy prison camp which for them would be what we in the US armed forces call an uncontrolled imprisonment where the environment is unpredictable and changes invariably with the personell controlling the detaining operation. or b) return fire, neutralize the enemy, save hundreds of lives, win combat action metals, and be able to return home safely to their families. You tell me which one sounds to be the better of the two.
