Finished my Ruger SBH winter project
« on: March 06, 2009, 12:29:11 PM »
When I first purchased this 4 5/8 SBH, I was looking for kind of a "beater", something I could carry in any weather, and not worry about.  This gun came along, stainless, lots of scratches, rubber grips.  Accurate as hell.  Just what I was looking for.

Well, one thing led to another, and I decided to make some changes.  I replaced all the springs, polished any rough spots in the action.  I replaced the grip frame with a square back Super Blackhawk unit (I was suprised how rough it came from the factory - lots of fitting and file work needed) and re-stocked it in nice Cocobolo.  Ran the entire thing through the buffer to give it a little shine.  I was going to use a bisley grip and stag handles, but changed my mind.

BigEasy:  Now that's the way to put together a nice woods gun.  Ruger's sometime take alot of finish work before the come up smooth but it looks like you have done it right.  You mentioned you had thought of using a Bisley grip but changed your mind - does the Bisley grip impart that much more direct recoil???

Thanks for the compliments.  I wanted something easy packing, with a little juice when I am hiking around up in moose country in northern Maine.  Something I didn't have to worry about cleaning and keeping dry, or scratching.   Took it to the range this morning after I got off duty, sighted it in for 250 grain Keith's at about 1300 fps - my serious woods carry load.  The same bullet at about 950 fps is my fun load.  Both about 2 inches at 25 yards.

Mikey - I like the way the Bisley grip handles heavy recoil, sort of like a DA revolver, in that it comes straight back into your hand.  I have big hands (size 19 ring), and I have a hard time with colt SA size / style grips when shooting a heavy recoiling load.  Seems there is just not a lot to hang onto during recoil.  The square back SBH grip is a comprimise - I like the style, and having a place to put my little finger.  It still gets me on the middle finger with 300 grain loads though..  When I really want max horsepower, I use one of my Redhawks, or my 5.5 inch Bisley.

Bigeasy, well done! Absolutely beautiful!  and saying you have big hands might be akin to saying Heidi Klum is kinda cute, that looks like a Single Six in your hand!

That looks great Bigeasy!
I bought my SBH new in 1990 it was a 7.5" Model, Ruger had not made a 4 5/8" model yet and I wanted a packin pistol so I chopped it down and have been very happy with it since. Aside from the action work I also reamed the cylinder and gave it a 11 deg. Forcing cone recently and it just gets better. Hope you have as much fun with yours as I do.

Nice looking rig Salvo.  A short barrel along with the square back trigger guard grip frame just seem to go together.
