Thoughts on Rem. 600 Mohawk ?
« on: March 07, 2009, 10:55:33 AM »
Last 2 gun shows I've looked at a 600 mohawk .243 carbine. It has an older bushnell scope. looks like good cond., asking $475. I'll  see it tomarrow at another show. What are the pros & cons and going prices?

You hardly ever see them for sale in this neck of the woods, so I can't help you much on prices. I've owned a 243 that I sold and currently have a 6mm. Both were just average shooters maybe 1.5 inch groups for my better loads. I took a rasp to the 2x4 stock on both of them and gave them some pretty fair lines. You really have to file deep to get the stamped checkering removed because over time it will raise and show up again in reverse if you stop filing as soon as you think it's gone. The big disappointment for me is that the guns are pretty heavy for their size. They are certainly handy with their abreviated barrels, but they're not real light weights.

I had two of them over the years, one a 243 the other a 308. The 308 turned into my wife's favorite firearm, it was a real tack driver. Had a neighbor store the rifle while we were on vacation and someone in that family went and managed to put a bulge in the barrel and bent the trigger.  Replaced the barrel with a non Rem barrel and sold it. If I was in the market for another rifle I would consider the Mohawk in 308 but not in anything smaller.

I bought one in 1977 in .243 for the grand sum of $75. How times have changed! I bought another (also in .243) for $385 back about two years ago and thought I got a steal. It seems to like 80 gr. Core-Lokts better than 100 grainers;strange. A lot of people don't like the dog-leg bolt and short barrel but to me that is what makes a Mohawk, well,a Mohawk-being different.  Kix

I love them!

I just shot my Mohawk 3 days ago and after one scope adjustment got three 80 gr. Core-Lokts into about a 1.5" group which I find acceptable. The scope? An old Weaver El Paso V9,3x9;my favorite scope of all time. Command it to do something and it responds. On the flip side I also shot my 6mm Rem. with a new 4-12 Leupold Rifleman and each adjustment was double what it was supposed to be-go figure. But I am getting off topic (again). My only complaint about my 600 is the factory "orange" stock it came with but that is going to be remedied real soon. I do have one recommendation;get one in .308 because it is a much more versatile caliber.  Kix

It's more than $250 so why not save your money for a 788 if you need to buy a low end vintage Remington rifle. They did not sell well in their prime so one would not want to pay too much for one now.

That cheesy plastic "trigger guard-bottom magazine plate" makes me want to scream.  I could never buy one unless I bought one of the aftermarket trigger groups in steel, which I think cost almost as much as a used rifle itself!

I'd get it. Sometimes you can find them cheap, because they don't know about the cult following.

I have two in 6mm Remington and one in .308.

My mistake, I walked into a store they were selling them for less then $80.  It may not have been a mistake, because I bought my son a Remington 700 for $149.  The Remington 600 was too plastic for me at the time.  I had one in hand, a 308, it would have made a good brush and foul weather rifle when most shots are at close range.

Um, yea Siski, that was a mistake.  At the gunshows in Memphis, they go for a minimum of $425 to $450.   The people that like them REAllY like them, and tend to collect them, and will pay the freight!

Ouch! I should have bought both, the 700 for the boy and the 600 for me.

Some more info:   I just got back from a gunshow in Central Va about an hour ago.  There were two Mohawks there, each in about 98% condition,  one in .308, and one in .243.  Different sellers at different tables.  Asking price for the .243 was $495.  Asking price for the .308 was $525.

Also, I just found out that you can buy a brand new, aluminum, black adonized, trigger guard/bottom plate, for $85.00  (They are listed on Gunbroker)  No need to buy the nearly $200 all steel replacement set.

have one in .308 and really love the thing.  In the process of looking for upgrades recently have discovered I'm not the only fella who really likes these things... I guess I'm a part of the cult too!  Mine shoots under in inch with handloads and 165 nosler ballistic tip.  Most importantly tho, it just feels so good in my hands!
