i still want to get a single action, and would love to practice alot, but my neighbors have a fit even with something as quiet as a .22. i was wondering if an accurate load could be made for a .45, and have it quieter than a .22, down to maybe pump up pellet gun levels, yet remain accurate at 10-15 yards. is that possible?

yes you can but i recommend the
single action handi rifle with 22 inch barrel

no experience with 45 but good luck with 38 and 44

The quietest thing you could do with a 45 or 38 would be to shoot wax bullets with a primer only, no powder. You have to enlarge the primer hole in the cartridge cases, and make sure they never get used accidently for full, bulleted loads. Speer years ago made plastic bullets and cartridges for primer only shooting, but I doubt they are still available.

Actually, I think the Speer plastic bullets and projectiles are still available. Or, use brass cases ( with primer hole drilled out as mentioned ) with the plasic projetiles.
Or, get a decent air pistol. Probably the best best for your situation.

.22CB's in a closed breech gun is as quiet as I could get. Also tried .22Hornet with .22 air rifle pellets and 1.5gr Bullseye(and w/ just small rifle mag primer).

thanks for the replies. i love to shoot, but the range is about 45 minutes away, which is not bad at all for once every week or 2, but id love something to shoot everyday, and like someone said, and air pistol would be fun as well. ill check into it.
my dad said he and his dad shot .38's with wax bullets in the basement of his house.

Do a search on the handloading forum for glue bullets, basicallly use a hot glue gun to cast your own bullets, Just like wax but the glooets are reuseable I'd do it with a .38/.357 but a .45 will work just as well. Most supply houses have rubber or plastic bullets to.

I have the same problem,here in N.Y. you get a swat team showing up if they hear one shot.I tryed wax bullets,also Aguila super colibri 500 fps even some .177 air rifles are very loud.There is a company that makes inserts for .45 LC revolvers so you can use .22's that might be your best choice.

Check with Brownell's and Midway. There is an outfit that makes reusable rubber bullets for the .45 to be powered with primers only.

i didn't publish my quiet load data because greybeard always gets on me

but be carefull of barrel obstructions as
slow bullets sometime fail to clear the muzzle

I used the speer plastic bullets in my basement for a time with my .357 Ruger. They were fine for practice but not super accurate. 44 Man

buckslayer, I know that it sounds boring but I still do a lot of "quiet practice" by dryfiring. You can overcome the boredom by putting a greater emphathis on your breathing, trigger control, and follow through.
I will go as far as to call hit's or misses on those smaller objects that are out there a way's

...when I do get to the range, I can tell that this practice really has helped!...there is nothing like the (smug satisfaction)
that you can realize by getting consistant hits.

The CO2 revolvers are rather quiet and the singleshot air pistols are very quiet. I have a Daisy 717, single pump pneumatic which drives tacks at 25 feet and I think they still retail under 100 bucks. If you want more power without noise, get a crossbow.

The OP wasn't looking for a quiet pistol, he was looking for a quiet way to practice with a SA in .45. He wanted to practice a lot without getting his neighbors shorts in a knot. While typing this I am recalling clearing an obstruction from a muzzleloader in my back yord by shooting it out, and hearing all the folks opening doors to see what I was doing. With the smoke cloud it was hard to pretend I wasn't the bad guy.

As I posted before you can get inserts from .45 LC and shoot .22 cb or the powder-less kind.The only time I got to get in some trigger time around here was when they were building a house down the street,the nail hammers covered the sound real good.

I used the primer powered plastic bullets to reduce the population of European collared doves in Central Fl. when I lived there. They're only good out to 20 or so feet, but will even kill a squirrel with a head shot at that distance. The doves are a non-native species so there isn't a season on then, and they roast quite well too. I lived in a residential area with a privacy fence around my pool, where the doves came to bathe and make a mess til they got the message.

IMHO you should dry fire or go for the air pistol. Years ago, I tried plastic, wax and other various bullet compositions and gave up on all. POI was drastically different and it really was not much fun. Air guns are very accurate and quiet enough.

You could also build a tire tunnel, or a barrel type with insulation and baffles, Glue bullets are fun too, but still dangerous.

I know you want to find a way to do this with a powder-burner....But....I started using a good air-pistol years ago. NOTHING I have done has impacted my "accuracy shooting" more than practicing with it. All of my pistol shooting improved dramatically.
To be good with it I have to focus and follow through. On a good day I can cut a dandelion stem at 10 yards with it, takes me a few shots though. My son saw me do it and said "do it again".....Nope son, ya just have to know when to be happy and stop.

Just be carefull of ricochetes if you down load.I would look to join a local range.
homebuilt, I agree. So many people around here move to the rural are and then complain about the smells from farms.

The sad part is, they colonise the areas around farms and sue over the smells they actually WIN! That's horseshit.

On the downloaded ammo and ricochets, that's a big +1! I thought I'd try splitting wood with my .45 Colt one day... fortunately, my Trailboss loads were just right. The one that bounced off of that piece of hedge came back and tapped me on the leg, but not hard enough to hurt.

Buck, I've tried round balls, collar buttons, wax and rubber for bullets. Trust me on this, buy a decent air pistol and prosper. I had to have my 30 year old HW70 repaired a while back, and went crazy until I got it back home.

I make the glue gun bullets and propel them with just a primer. They'd probably kill a guy at across the room distance, with a headshot. I know for a fact that they'll cut a full caliber hole in my kitchen cabinet doors!

Belligerant gun owners/neighbors is one of the reasons the "anti-gunners" are so so prevalent.

FWIW, the .45 Colt rifled chamber inserts, that allow firing .22 lr's in a .45 revolver, are not what I would refer to as accurate - since they're designed so the CF owner can get live trigger time on close targets like beer cans (size).

With only one inch of rifling, and specious QC, some .22 slugs cut wads, while others keyhole - as close as 7yds (21').

When I exercise my rights on my own land where it's legal, nobody has any right to do a damn thing about it. If they wanted to be sure they didn't hear gunfire before they moved in, they shoulda talked to the neighbors first to make sure they weren't shooters. If they were on their property first, there are some, but very few things they can say about it, and that's as it should be. If you don't want to deal with the laws being as they are in the country, move to town, and vice versa.
