30caliber Nosler 125 gr. BT
« on: September 02, 2003, 03:47:42 PM »
I started working on a load for the 300 Whisper with a 125 gr. Nosler BT today. I did not have time to go to my range so I shot in the back yard.
I set the cronograph up and first fired the five remaining fireforming loads I had to see what they would do. That load was 10 gr. of AA#7 and a Remington 150gr. 30/30 bullet. It clocked 1325 fps. Then I loaded one round with 17gr of Lil'Gun powder, one with 17.5 and two with 18 gr. and fired them. Only one round went under 2000 fps and that was the 17.5 gr round at 1993 fps. Pressure seemed fine in my gun for all of these rounds and I might have went on up with the powder charges but I had a little accident on the  nineth round fired. The skyscreen on my Oehler 33 jumped up in the way and got shot.
The main question I have is have any of you used the 125 gr. Ballistic Tip at the same aproximate velocity for deer. and how did it do. At what range do you feel would the max. for this load. This is all assuming that it is accurate enough for hunting once I get it to the bench.

I'm loading the 125 BT under 18.3 gr W296 in my 300 Whisper, haven't had a chance to use it on deer yet. Does a great job on gallon milk jugs filled with water though!

Nosler claims that BTs work all the way down to 1600 fps.  Try one on a water jug at what ever range you plan to be your max for deer.  If it will open up on a water bottle, I'm pretty sure it will open up on a deer.

Out of my 10'' s.s. barrel using H110 it opens the deer up nicely. It leaves the barrel at over 2100. Hope this helps.

Have  an  barrel ordered from OTT .We have been talking about twist rate  and aol for a dummy cartridge. My handloading has been for the smaller cal . 6mm @ .224 cal., these bigger cal. are new to me , if you discount 50 cal muzzle loader. What kinds of aol's are you guys using and what twists.I am like Gregory in that I'm going to use this round for deer here in S. Il. Thanking you in advance.

With the Nosler 125 BT my COL is 2.16".  SSK 1-8" twist 10" barrel.  Haven't chrono'd it yey but the same powder charge with the Horn 130 gr SSP bullet does 2000 fps.
coalminer, I hunt Clark county IL.

I don't know about the 300 wisper but in my 15" 308 Win barrel they are heart breakers and widow makers. I took 3 deer last year with 125 gr BT's in my 308 win and they did a great job. I shoot 125 gr BT's over 51.0 grains of W748. :D
