howa 204 range report
« on: March 08, 2009, 03:04:09 AM »
I finally got enough $ saved to get my dream scope, a vx 3 8.5x25 with varmint hunters reticle.  I have only tested two powders in this gun so far, H322 and Reloader 15.  Reloader 15 is the best powder so far, I have tried loads of both powders from start to max and have found 29.1 grains of reloader 15, hornady brass, cci br4 primers and the 32 grain vmax to be very accurate.

whew! that'll work!

i haven't shot a .204 yet that wouldn't make tiny little groups. and the howas can flat out SHOOT.

they're starting to go up in price now that people know it, though. kinda like savage did.

what i used in mine was the sierra 32 grain blitzking and varget. i did not get the gaudy velocity numbers but i DID get a lot of 0.3" and less groups.

I bought this 204 as a barreled action for a little over 300 bucks,  Anyone wanting a new howa varminter should consider buying the barreled action and stock seperate.

the only problem i see with the howa is they are so heavy, even in sporter configuration. i really would rather they put a lighter barrel on them and try to trim a little weight elsewhere too.

i had one that shot wonderfully but i got sick of lugging it around so i sold it.

Mine weighs in with scope sling and bipods at just over 13 pounds, but I like it heavy because its my sitting groundhog gun it makes keeping on target for the long shots easier.  My walkin groundhog guns are much lighter.

I like their barreled action program also. Just put together a rifle for my son using one.
You've put together just the gun I've been thinking of. How do you like that B&C stock.

I really like the stock, especially the fat palm swell and high comb. The action also fits pretty snug into the aluminum bedding block, but this coming winter i plan on skim bedding it also for a perfect fit.
