I recently went to the range to do some load testing with my 454. I was using several different loads trying to come up with a milder version of the 454 yet a little more potent than a 45 Colt. In doing so , my 454 perfers 2400 with the 240 grain XTP. I'm using the mag version due to the pressures of the 454. I was bagging my SRH at 25 yds , open sights....shooting into 3/4 inch rubber conveyor belting backed by 5/8 plywood and of course a mostly frozen pile of sandy dirt. I recovered four bullets from my testing , I was impressed........I would imagine a lot of you have seen these bullets preform before...I had not. below is the pics of my testing. The ones that are more flattened are from my 1700-1750 FPS load....the other two are from a 1550-1600 load. ( all FPS estimates are taken from what a particular load was supposed to be giving me from the manuals used , Hornady , Lyman , Speer . I don't have a chorny yet ) I realize the results may be different on flesh and bone.........but they certainly didn't break apart. I did weigh them...the ones that are flattened come in at 219.....the others come in a 240 and 241....not sure how it comes in heavier.....of course, I didn't weigh them before firing.
Thought this might interest anyone that was considering the XTP for hunting...I wouldn't hesitate !
