Deadening the Stevens 200 Stock ?
« on: March 08, 2009, 02:16:55 PM »
What is everybody using to deaden the sound of the buttstock of the stevens 200 stock.
I've thought of using blow foam, but didn't know if it would affect the plastic in a negative way.

Thanks
Steamin

You need to be careful using the expanding foam, I've done it with another synthetic stock and warped the recoil pad when it was done expanding, left a mess too. I've chosen to use packing peanuts since, you can pack it in real good, and it's easily removed if you need to.

do not use the spray in foam, it makes a very big mess and a very big issue if you should have to ever get it out.
If you should decide to use the the foam you should coat the inside of the stock with some kind of release agent then tape up the eniter  outside of the stock so any over flow will not damage anything.

I have used the packing peanuts and they work well.

I'm just curious (as I own a Stevens 200) but why are you dead-ing the butstock of this rifle?

The hollow plastic stock will make noise when rubbed up against branches or even brush. It really means nothing if you are a varmint hunter, but if you are stalking big game a hollow "thunk" sound or loud scraping noise when going through brush can spook game. Or if you are in a tree stand and would happen to strike a your tree stand with the butt stock or a heavy branch while getting your gun into firing position - again spooked game.

Thanks LaO.

I put buttstock shellholders on my hunting rifles. This seems to do the job for me.

My reason for wanting to deaden the sound is a personal one that is shared by others, I don't like the hollow clunking sound it makes.
I've thought about shoving some old socks in it, but I'll give the peanuts a try.

I know it's just a cheap plastic stock, but I would like to take some of the sound out and add a little weight to it.

Thanks

LOL!!! You really don't want to go around in the woods leavin that kind of constant scent trail! And imagine if it's a warm rainy day!!!

Actually, even though the Stevens stock is considered a "cheepie", I kind of like it. With a little bit of work and some cost effective paint, and if you want to stuff it with some deading material in it, the stock will still let the gun perform well. I don't know if you can ask for more than that from a "cheepie".

The newer stocks are even better than the older style. I agree you can work them over a little and they do not look that bad. I have heard complaints that the stock is too flimsy in the fore end. I really do not think that comes into play. There are lots of room between the stock and the barrel - it would take a lot of twisting to get the stock to touch the barrel while firing.

Not having one.  B ut can you remove the butt pad?
is there a hole into the stock from there?
If so pour in what ever old tumbler media, rice, dried peas, air popped pop corn (corn smell comming from your rifle may have the deer hunting you)  ;D  beans or combo of sand, media, rice, and lead shot to give you the sound and weight you desire.
put the butt pad back on.
