308 Rossi Rifle Good/Bad ??
« on: March 08, 2009, 11:32:57 PM »
How does $129 sound for a 308/scope rail.  NIB.  Its marked for clearance at Gander.  They also had some matched pairs for $149.  Are those good prices??  Is the 308 a good shooter?

BUY IT TODAY.....or tell me which Gander :):)

I picked mine up on slae at $149 and have had ZERO regrets.  Just shot it recently and enjoyed it immensly.  My Rossi .308 single is set up currently to shoot "puff ball" loads and my scope is adjusted accordingly, it is an absolute pleasure.

While shooting commercial and reload ammo at regular velocity I was able to pull a 2" grouping and at 47 yds able to get a number of 1" groups .....a touch over 1" anyway :)

I have actually bought a number of Rossi's and have been impressed with value for what you pay.  A NATO round rifle for $129 plus a little tax????  What else could you need to know?

I paid way to much for one at dick's S G about 7 or 8 years ago. it was a combo pack with a piece of crap simmons scope on it. think I paid 289 for it. I was young and dumb. i'm not recoil shy but, this thing was brutal and it ate scopes for lunch. i finally put a busnell banner 3x9x40 on it and it became a shooter 150 gr. rem. core lock would print 1.5" or less @ 100 yards. to make a short story even shorter two years later i sold it for 225 without the scope and bought a stevens 200 in 308 which was sub MOA out of the box. for the price your talkin about i'd jump on it just to have a back up.

There was a Rossi 308 at the Bemidji,MN Gander MTN for $119, didnt buy  it cuz it was so lite I thought it would hurt too much from the recoil. Does this qualify as not too smart?? :'(   (Altho I did buy a H&R 22/410 Versa Pak NIB for $129 to somewhat redeem myself)

I bought the Rossi Trifecta in .22, .243 and 20 gauge.  It's a youth stock and way too light for the larger calibers.  I installed a slip-on Limbsaver recoil pad and now I don't get bruised.  I'm also hand loading so I can adjust the charge.  Bottom line, the youth Rossi is not for youth!

I just bought one for $99. I figured that it would be a dandy cast bullet gun.

Excellent Buy!  I have one for a cast bullet gun as well and it does very well.  I also bought a couple of those cartridge conversion shells that allow me to shoot 32 ACP in it and those are surprisingly accurate (1" at 50 yards), without resighting.

I also have a 7.62x39 that I use for cast bullets.  A real tack driver!

I hate to hijack this thread but how does the cartridge adapters hold up? According to the web site where they're sold, they are "Throw Away". I'd like some life out of them. At least more than they advertise. I too have a 7.62x39 that I'm going to use with cast bullets. do you care to pm me with some of your load data for each? Do you cast yourself or use commercially cast?

I got the cartridge adaptors from /www.e-gunparts.com. Sach cartridge adaptors.  These can be re-used indefinitely and are of quality steel and are around $20. As far as the 7.62x39 loads, I am loading 19.5 gr of BLC-2 powder under a 155 gr Lee lead bullet that I cast.  The 160 grain bullet they sell a mold for also work good and gets the same load.  You will need to use a magnum primer with these loads, as this stuff is a bit finicky to light without the mag primer.

I was just shooting it today, and was shooting 5 shot groups @ 50 yds that a thumbnail could cover.  No kidding.  The load is about 1500 fps and I think I am going to use it for coyotes, as the max shot is 125-150 yards.  the Lee program shows that I should sight in at about 3" high to be dead on at 150, while retaining about 600 ft lbs of energy. More than enough for a coyote.

I have had my best luck with Lapua brass in these, but you may need to experiment.
