Barrel Twist
« on: March 09, 2009, 05:48:38 AM »
I think I am in the right area for this topic. I checked in the FAQ's to get my bbl twist rate for my .204 UV and my .308 survivor, and if memory serves me correct is this right. If you have a 1 in 12 twist that means the bullet is turning one time per every twelve inches. so on a 1 in 12 it will turn two complete times in a 24 inch BBL before exit. Also the lower the second number  1 in 9 lets say, 9 will have better control on heavier gr bullets. Opposed to a 1 in 12 will have better control on lighter grain bullets. Also for instance if you shot a .204 32 grain round in a 1 in 8or9 twist BBL wouldn't it fly apart due to cintrifical force. They probably don't make .204 bbl's with a 1 in 8or9 twist well they might but i don't think it's common for that reason. I really hope I'm right on these questions because if not I will have to retrain my brain, and there ain't much there to retrain.       :-[ :-\ ??? ;D

Yes, your basically correct. The faster the twist, the heavier the bullet it will stabilize.

Bullets spinning too fast is only part of the equation when a bullet desintigrates. It usually only happens with lightly constructed jacketed varmint bullets, fired at high velocities from rifles with "sharp" rifling.
I experienced it with my then new 788 Rem in 22-250 when shooting Sierra BLITZ bullet handloads. It didn't happen every shot, but a couple times I shot and the bullet never made it to the target. Then with the second shot you would see only one bullet hole in near the bull.

I had a M70 .223 WSSM that would overstablize lighter varmint bullets and cause a couple to fly apart.  We tried shooting them @ 50 yards and occasionally you would see what looked like tiny shotgun hits next to a bullet hole...
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."
